Ontario Giving $1,000 Rebate On EV Chargers

Perenially broke Ontario is now subsidizing electric vehicle charges. Consumers can claim as much as $1,000 of the total cost of the charger

The Globe and Mail reports that

Starting Jan. 1, 2013, the government will cover 50 per cent of the total purchase and installation cost of installing a 240-volt charging station at their home or workplace, up to a rebate limit of $1,000, whichever is lower. The program is aimed at homeowners and businesses who received a provincial electric vehicle rebate and have installed or are planning to install an electric vehicle charging station, or to help potential plug-in car buyers interested in low or zero local emissions vehicles, but reticent about the extra upfront costs involved.

Plug-in vehicles also carry a $5,000-$8,000 rebate, but unlike other provinces, there were no funds earmarked for charging equipment. The subsidy comes at a time when Ontario residents are fuming over the suspension of their provincial legislature and questions about hundreds of millions in misspent government funds for various green energy projects.

To anyone who takes advantage of this subsidy, here's a big snarky "You're Weclome!!!!11! Hope you like your solar panels too.". Signed, Ontario tax payer.

With that solar panel program you'd have to be an idiot not to participate :p I'd gladly take a guaranteed $0.80/kwh rate for power I prodiced from my panels.

Seriously, how many do you think are here? 10? 50? Less than a 100 and most have already paid for their chargers anyway. This is about optics and the dipshit's green policy. It looks good but, for once, won't cost much. Ironically, because they sat on this for so long the hype for plugins has fallen to the point of irrelevancy.

Rats. It would be nice for US or Pennsylvania's taxpayers compensate me for my $750 charger for the Leaf. [I bought a nice Schneider Electric product through Home Depot, not the ridiculously-priced one from Nissan.] Seriously, I bought it as a matter of convenience, and without expectation that someone else would pick up the tab. My savings in gasoline will pay for it in about 8 months anyway. [Incidentally, that photo is of a 480-Volt charger plug, not a 240-Volt plug, but it looks impressive nevertheless.]

I was personally fuming over millions wasted on various horribly mismanaged medical projects and the legislature being shut because *democracy is hard.* Also you should check out Michigan if you want really broke. The new Michigan-Canada bridge had to be funded by the American Fed. and Ontario.
