The AP [via The Freep] reports:

Denis Baupin, an environmental official in the mayor’s office, said Wednesday that sport utility vehicles and old diesel cars are likely to be targeted in upcoming test restrictions.

To any Parisian who drives an SUV, Baupin’s advice is: “Sell it and buy a vehicle that’s compatible with city life.

“I’m sorry, but having a sport utility vehicle in a city makes no sense,”

Five French cities are eying bans on inefficient classes of automobiles as they become “ZAPA”s, or Priority Zones for Action against Air Pollution. These areas include Paris, Lyon, Grenoble and Aix-en-Provence. France’s cities are some of the most congested and polluted in Europe, and older diesels as well as 4×4 vehicles are blamed for a disproportionate contribution to the problem. We simply hope that vintage Mustangs don’t get caught up in the Parisian guzzler ban.

    I guess the gas taxes aren’t doing enough there.  But SUVs probably aren’t the problem.  I could can get a car that is pretty inefficient as well.  I do wonder if they are going to be cutting small crossovers as well.

    The folly of government interventionism continues.   And it will sound like a great idea to some people, until they find themselves waiting in line 45 minutes to buy toilet paper.

    You have to admire the idea. I think there are too many SUV’s around with one person in them taking up space as well, but I think if people want to buy and use them they certainly can. However in all practicality it makes it less inviting for some to stay in the city. And will they allow delivery vehicles but not passenger vehicles?
    I think there are more subtle ways this can be done. Raise taxes on gas guzzlers, make sure all the parking spaces are too small for SUVs and parking in two spaces gets a big ticket, higher registration fees, there are a number of ways. I don’t see a complete ban as enforceable.

      they probably will exempt large vans as commercial vehicles. the solution will be to get a very large SUV that is classified as Van. More polluting than a small SUV, but exempt.
      Same way as CAFE promoted SUVs since they are classified as small trucks. Even when they use more gas than a wagon, wagons are cars and have a harder time meeting (car) CAFE.

      Yikes!  This is exactly the sort of leap of logic that makes government intervention so scary.
      If the problem is single-occupant vehicles causing pollution or congestion or excessive energy consumption, then the solution is to ban all single-occupant vehicles.  Not just the ones you don’t like.   Otherwise, they just might come after your car next, for whatever reason tickles their fancy.

    did you include the Mustang for dramatic effect? The Mustang not very often came in diesel or SUV version….
    On topic: if pollution is too high, it makes sense to target the worst polluters. An old diesel can pollute as much or more as 10 new cars. Throwing more money at the 10 new cars to get them even cleaner isn’t effective.
    Ironically governments promoted diesel cars by lowering diesel fuel tax. I’m not sure about France, but in Germany diesel fuel is taxed much less than gasoline hence the 50% diesel cars. Emission standards foe diesel cars are also more lax than for gasoline cars. i understand that the Paris mayor doesn’t have jurisdiction over emission regulations and tax and he tries to make the best of it.

    How about banning some know-better do-gooder politicians first?
    Then it would be tempting to reinstall one’s belief in mankind’s sanity.
    Oh and I am sure all these guys will make themselves exempt.

    I HATE THIS KIND OF LAW!  I understand the logic behind it, but that slippery slope is getting slipperier.

    It’s different in a French city from an American city. I was once gridlocked on my bicycle in Paris.

    They were discussing this plan back when I lived in Paris in 2003-04. We’ll see if it ever comes into force, small SUV/CUVs are everywhere in Paris.

    I’ve heard discussion like this before and they usually come to a halt when it’s time to define what constitutes a SUV. Or when it’s discovered that one or more of the politicians most verbose about a ban drive SUVs themselves.

    Except when it comes to SUV’s that is.

    Just typical lipstick on a pig political manuvering. I’ve been to Paris many times and can tell you a typical SUV, as we know them in the U.S., is a rare sight there; banning them will do nothing other than give some politician re-election fodder. Paris’ problem is traffic; endless, endless, streams of traffic.
