geeber : September 8th, 2009 at 10:07 am FreedMike: “I need a gun because I might be the first person in 18 years in my locality to suffer a home invasion.” Or, my favorite (an actual quote from one of my neighbors): “I don’t feel safe walking from the parking lot to Nordstrom unless I’m strapped.” To this person, I say: “Are you POSITIVE your health plan doesn’t cover psychotherapy?” Do yourself a favor - google “Clayton Cramer” and his self-defense blog, and see how “unnecessary” guns really are. Whatever. I'm sure this guy is going to provide all kinds of anecdotal "evidence" (read: a clip from some newspaper or TV station about how some guy fought off a home intruder because he was armed). But here's some hard evidence of your real chances of getting into a situation - i.e., rape, murder, or robbery - that you'd need a gun to fight your way out of, in the kind of neighborhood this car dealer's in. http://www.hellochesterfield.com/crime.cfm In that city in 2005, there was one murder, one rape, six robberies and 32 assaults. The city had a population of 47,984. Therefore, your chances of being murdered or raped are about 1 in 48,000. Your chances of being robbed are about 1 in 8,000. Your chances of being burglarized are about about 1 in 1,500. By comparison, the odds of dying in a plane crash are about 1 in 20,000. And these types of stats are typical of affluent suburban cities - the places most likely to have citizens who need to feel armed to be safe.

FreedMike So, just because it doesn't happen, you don't think people should have the option to defend themselves? How many times are guns used defensively per year? Lowest number (NCVS) is almost 100,000. Highest is 2+ million, although that wasn't a great study, so it's probably somewhere between 100,000 and a million. Have YOU ever been attacked? Do you know anything about "fighting your way out?" Without a firearm? How often do LEGAL gun owners and CHL/CCW permit holders actually commit crimes? (Check Florida and Texas for studies on these). It's low. Finally, do you rely on the police for protection? Can you call them fast enough? Do they legally have to protect you (hint: no. Castle Rock v Gonzales). What happens when you live in a place like Oregon (my home), where there are violence problems in the wilderness (http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/03/us.marijuana.cartels/)? Who is going to take care of you there? I spoke with a cop/armorer in Corvallis OR. It's a wealthy city PD of about 51,000. He told me they have 4 guys on duty for 50,000 people and 13.8 square miles. Does that cover it? Maybe you should ask Brooke Wilberger. I guess you don't think people in places like Corvallis should be able to defend themselves against criminals (or animals, we have dangerous ones here). And yes, I've been violently attacked. My buddy almost died on the spot from loss of blood during an incident where we were both mugged. I'm also a certified law enforcement armorer and have extensive formal training in safety, handling, tactics, and armorers work.

FreedMike: Whatever. I’m sure this guy is going to provide all kinds of anecdotal “evidence” (read: a clip from some newspaper or TV station about how some guy fought off a home intruder because he was armed). Considering how many he regularly collects and posts, I'd say his site constitutes more than anecdotal evidence. And given that he only lists news stories, not rumors or what his uncle's favorite cousin's aunt said, I'd say that it constitutes more than an anecdote. FreedMike: But here’s some hard evidence of your real chances of getting into a situation - i.e., rape, murder, or robbery - that you’d need a gun to fight your way out of, in the kind of neighborhood this car dealer’s in. Just because you feel safe doesn't mean that others share the same feelings. Please note that no one is forcing you to carry a gun if you don't want to do so. And most people I know venture far from their home town or city on a regular basis.

geeber: While I agree with your sentiment, I think what FreedMike is railing against is "fear buying" - insisting that some lib president is going to take your gun away - and buying assault rifle ammo in response. It's not the gun-owning people have that FreedMike has a problem with. I definitely don't. What I'm more scared of is that hundreds of thousands of gun owners stockpile ammo on command whenever a democrat's in charge, as if someone's going to charge in a take away your kids and your rifles. It's a little scary to see it happen en masse, as if the Russian Reds were really going to stomp into our yards. Like I said, no offense meant to lawful and respectable gun owners. I hunt and trap shoot with my Browning that my grandpa bought me and I love it. I do, however, agree with FreedMike that if someone's paranoid enough about Obama to stockpile some ARs in his home and worry about invasions - or at least if someone's dumb enough to use this as a REASON to own a gun - I probably don't trust him with his guns. I'll keep my kids away from that moron.
