The government, despite partisan bitching, is walking the middle ground. Spoken like a true partisan whose party is in power of the government. I'm still waiting for an exit strategy that explains how the government will divest itself of GM stock, should the company actually survive and be profitable.

A lot of the people out there don't realize that the UAW wages is a industry standard to what ALL wages is based upon. Everything from McDonald's to construction bridge builders, Alaskan pipe welders, and everything that helps build this country. If Americans and i mean true Americans would only buy American products then we would all have jobs. As long as people only want to get the cheapest price on everything then that's what they will get in the long run a very cheap living. If you are hungry eat your import!

The UAW’s interests have been seen to by giving their VEBA a big chunk of the new GM’s equity. You mean the big fat chunk of nothing? Yeah, sure, that's really helping the UAW. They get effectively worthless equity and no power whatsoever. Were the VEBA contribution actually worth something we wouldn't be looking down the tubes at pension/healthcare coverage issues. But we are because the equity share is worthless. The UAW is getting effectively nothing. Their membership shrinks and their VEBA remains functionally unfunded. If Obama was really in it for the UAW, they'd be ensuring employment and blocking offshoring. Spoken like a true partisan whose party is in power of the government. Believe it or not, this is the middle road, you're just so far from centre that it looks like radical leftism. The libertarian tack would have been letting the whole thing collapse in a firestorm in hopes that the market would correct (eventually, perhaps after a decade of misery); the leftist take would have been outright purchase of GM and Chrysler, turning it into the American Renault, which may or may not work either. American right-wingers are so lacking in perspective that they don't seem to understand that what an actual leftist government would do. It would be an outright nationalization with explicit, direct control, not a wishy-washy bail-out. Think about what France did with Renault and you'll get the idea. For the record, that's what I would have like to see happen, and it's definitely not happening here. What the Obama administration is doing is not even close to being that radical: they're simply floating GM through bankruptcy and out the other side. The US hasn't the stomach for a real command economy.

Oh, how the tables will turn. I hate to admit this because I never believed it. The UAW has been warning big business for the last 20+ years of shipping jobs out of the country. Well, I regret to say that they were right. "The bottom has fallen out of the bucket". The next thing to happen will be the states that have been slated as having a GM facility closing will await the after-shock. The after-shock will do more damage than the actual quake. So for everyone smiling and thinking GM/UAW derserves what their getting, hold onto your socks if you live in one of the states that have closures slated. The only state that can possibly endure it is Michigan, because America/Americans turned their backs on them a long time ago. For the folks who live in the south and think they're in good shape because they have transplants,, well your fore fathers all moved north for good paying jobs in the early days when Michigan was booming and the thought then was to get a job that paid above average wages to have a chance of a better life for their families. For some reason the attitude is that Americans don't want to aspire into higher paying jobs they just want everyone at the same level. I still haven't figured out why people secretly want to see people who make more money than they do, lose their job. This after shock is gonna be big and folks who make say 2/3 of what a auto worker makes,, well I'm sorry to say that your wage and job will be in trouble very soon. Whether we like it or not we are like the food chain, when the larger game is all killed off, the hunter is forced to go after smaller and smaller game. All the American jobs are linked together in one way or another. God Bless our children.
