I might be wrong, but I doubt the MX-5/Miata is going anywhere. Even if Mazda dies, I think that is a name numerous companies would wait in line to buy and continue production in some form or another. It’s a niche product for sure, but also an icon, and just like the Jeep Wrangler sometimes that’s all a company needs to justify it’s existence.

Mazda is a technology powerhouse and Ford’s own products benefit from it a lot.

And they still will be. The two companies are joined at the hip anyways, and have been since Ford had a small stake in them. This move gives Ford a (pittance) of cash and since Mazda is hot property anyways, they wont suffer.

Symbolically, though, it’s a sad commentary on Ford, and perhaps to a greater degree Volvo whom no one wants to buy.

So, Ford is willing to sell Mazda for a mere $850 million? Will this money even last them one month? This sounds like a really stupid idea. Mazda is a technology powerhouse and Ford’s own products benefit from it a lot. They want to give up the stake in it just for the sake of some more cash they can burn in a few weeks?
