vauxhalllogos.jpgAccording to an AutoExpress article that reads suspiciously like a press release, GM's UK subsidiary Vauxhall will be getting a "new" logo. They, ahem, "report" that "the sharp yet simple new logo will set a more upmarket tone for the company as it aims to pitch its forthcoming models against prestige rivals." Translation: many UK consumers think of Vauxhalls as downmarket tat and between the French (Renault mainly) and Germans (BMW and VW), we're under heavy fire. The storied Vauxhall name and its models are so tainted that the Vectra nameplate is being replaced with Insignia this summer. How long will the Vauxhall name survive in the UK? (Ireland switched to Opel in 1982.) The only thing stronger than 3-Series sales in the UK is British nationalism. Vauxhall ain't going nowhere.

    Do me a cheesy quaver! If british nationalism is prevalent, Rover would not have gone under! Every car maker who advertises inthe UK practically forces their nationalism in the face of the UK public and we accept it! I’ll draw your attention to FIAT selling their Punto as “The Italian Job, remixed” with a red, white and green Punto driving around or Renault as “createur d’automobiles”. Or how about, VW advertising the “Germanness” of their cars with “liebe aus automobil”?

    “British nationalism”?! Bunch of arse!

    Oh and Vauxhall cars suck, no matter what logo they use…..

    Well, price points being what they are, Vauxhall’s upper models DO indeed end up competing (poorly) with low-end Bimmers, Audis, et al. That doesn’t make them competitive, particularly when it comes to resale value, of course.

    My friend in Scotland wanted to get anew Car, she had driven Vauxhall for 15 yrs, I told her to get a Toyota Corolla Diesel, she loves it, she use it in her ministry, she tellls me the diffence between the two is like night and day, ahh such is life

    So GM’s UK subsidiary Vauxhall has gotten a bad rep, and the cure is … a new logo? It’s reminiscent of GM’s remedy for the bad reputation earned by their dealers’ service departments: the mythical Mr. Goodwrench.

    Oh, and Katie — does “do me a cheesy quaver” translate to “please pass the cheese-flavored potato chips”?
