opel_astra_s_ttac_01_01.jpgOpel is undergoing a serious identity change. The GTC or the Meriva Concept shows a new dynamic line, with intersecting creases on the side and headlights and turn signals mounted on the outside corner. The Insignia– the Jeremy Clarkson anti-matter sedan formerly known as the Vectra– is leading the new design wave. The second Opel to bring the new style on the market will be the fourth gen Astra. The car offers significant stylistic changes. The entire Astra line-up will get more dynamic and exciting. Even the five-door model presented here will have a slopy back and some muscle. The ascending prominence on the sides will became an Opel trademark. Spy shots show that the grill will resemble the Insignia's prow; different headlights will ensure model individuality. The UK will get the Astra as a Vauxhall and the US as a Saturn. You remember Saturn, don't you?

Bah! The upswing “Nike Swoosh™” will just be an allusion to the wheel vent fad that is all the rage at the moment. I doubt that this will be a memorable Opel trademark like the Beemer kidneys or Jeep grill and bug eyes. Once wheel vents go out of vogue, the upswoosh will be gone.

Apart from a being a bit curvier, this looks pretty much the same as the current Astra.

I still wouldn’t buy one. The interiors are horrible! More cheap plastic than an episode of “Baywatch”…..

    Whoa there missy!!!

Nothing wrong with a Slow Motion” version of Baywatch.

That’s the RIGHT kind of plastic!!!

Kinda makes me miss the a/c vents on an H2!

    Looks decent.

The interior plastics in the current Astra are among the top of its class. Others do just as well (Eurofocus, New Peug 308, Honda Civic) but many do worse (Golf V, Renault Mégane, Mazda3 etc)

Yes it’s an Opel/Vauxhall Astra so it’s infinitely bland (although, better than before) and I don’t like that, but it’s a decent offering in it’s segment nonetheless

The current 3 door Astra actually looks pretty good from the outside, considering…

If only they made it here, it’d be cheaper than a Cobalt and then they’d have a small car hit on their hands.

    (sigh)

Saw one in Sandy Eggo last week.

Also saw a new Volvo that is similar.
