#9 GM 2004 (3.6 million vehicles): From 1999 to 2004, tailgating took on a new dimension for the 134 customers who suffered minor accidents from collapsing tailgates. Corroded cables were the culprits. In 2004, GM offered to replace the tailgate cables on Silverados, Sierras, Escalades, and Avalanches. In their defense, it should be noted that customers are clearly warned not to stand on open tailgates. At least 134 have not read that part of the owner’s manual.

I have loaded many items in pickup trucks that weigh as much or more than me. I use the tailgate to sat the item in and slide it back. If you cant stand on the tailgate, presumabley because of weight issues, than why do everyone I see use the tailgate to help in the loading process? Those tailgates could have easily fallen/broken when weight is applied, regardless of source, if the cables were rusty. I get your point, if the people had read the manual they might have thought twice before standing the tailgate, per GM’s instructions. If, however, the cables were not rusty to begin with due to GM’s cheapness… Need I say more? :-D
