Toyota Cavalier (Japan)

Toyota Cavalier (Japan)

4) Toyota Cavalier. Proof that what’s good for the goose (Chevy Prism) is bad for the gander (Toyota Cavalier in Japan). The story goes that the Toyota Cavalier came about after Toyota executives went out for a raucous night of snorting Drano. Something to do with trade issues, NUMMI, the aforementioned Chevy Prism, and the right-hand drive Toyota Cavalier was born.

When I had heard that there would be a Toyota Cavalier it was confirmed that GM’s executives were idiots.

I wonder if the US Postal Service picked up on these?

I was working in Japan for GM when they tried fobbing the awful Cavalier off as a Toyota. This was at the height of “They don’t let us sell our cars in Japan!” movement in the states.

There were many problems. The first was the Cavalier was totally inferior to anything made in Japan. The second was were GM totally missed the play: the brought it in with the 2.4 litre Quad 4, an awful abomination of a motor to begin with. They didn’t bother to find out that under the Japanese tax law, the annual tax on a 2.4 litre would be in luxury car range. When we heard what GM was going to do, we loyal GM employees protested as loudly as we could about the impending disaster. But of course, GM being GM, treats its employees like peons and didn’t listen to us.

I can’t recall one ever being sold.

As an added sin, it provided the excuse for riceboys to put TRD stickers on their crappy base Cavaliers, as seen on ricecop.com.

They probably did this so the Japanese automotive schools could give their students training in how to replace blown head gaskets and cracked cylinder heads.
