No offense, Stu, but I think the bailout business is driving so much media coverage it would have overwhelmed even the best auto show. Besides, I thought people were realizing how little these things mean now that people can see them all on the internet. It's not the same as seeing it live, but it's a lot cheaper.

By not having much planned for the L.A. Auto Show, perhaps North America's most important auto show, the Big-3 have done nothing to help themselves...

I am no marketing expert but imagine if they could have done some very simple things to metaphorically say ' We are here, we are strong and we aren't going anywhere...' to counteract the endless drivel coming out of Congress...having lived in L.A. for 10 years, I don't seem to remember too many people there paying much attention to anything 'Back East' so have at it Big-3 while you have a captive audience-But they whiffed again-huh?...The Big-3 NEED to start making some sort of inroads into the California market-as California goes, so goes the country and with the Asian automakers playing in California like they are the 'home team' (and deservedly so)the Big-3 need to try and make the scene at the L.A. Show and all West Coast shows if they have any prayer of re-establishing a toe-hold into a market they seem to have given up on years ago.

Again, I'm not marketing expert by imagine these 'crazy' ideas that should be quite simple to execute:

1: Volt ride and drive...Have 5-10 pre-production 100mpg? Chevrolet Volts that people can take a ride and drive around a pre-determined route around LA for 10-15 minutes etc...that might get tongues wagging and people buzzing about a Chevrolet for once and might just be a PR coup...of course, I'm crazy. Then just for kicks, show them the Malibu Hybrid too because they can buy that NOW...

2: Challenger 2-by-2 autocross: Reserve part of the Staples Center parking lot and set up a small 2-by-2 Autocross with Slap-shift Challenger Hemis and let people beat on them all day and have some fun...

3: Ford Fiesta, Verve, Galaxy, S-Max and Ka ride and drive....similar to the Volt ride and drive but get people to experience the 'near future' of Ford and get some names and emails from interested parties and follow up with a tasteful marketing campaign when these models hopefully arrive.

4: Transformers: Have all the full-size Transformers made and standing outside the Staples Center with their production based examples sitting there for all to sit in...Okay, this one would co$t...'Hello little girl, I am Optimus Prime..." OK-I'm crazy.

I'm sure our dear readers can imagine more and better ideas than I can...bring them on...How could the Big-3 make a good showing at the L.A. Auto Show?
