A German business publication published a report this week claiming that Volkswagen won’t meet its 2015 profit goals, in part due to the costs associated with the new MQB modular platform.

Manager Magazin said that MQB’s costs (pegged by Morgan Stanley at around $70 billion), as well as decreased profitability of the next-generation Touran minivan and Tiguan SUV would reduce VW Group’s overall profits. VW’s CFO Hans Dieter Poetsch is also said to be looking to cut costs by as much as 1,000 euro per vehicle.

Volkswagen released a statement refuting the claims of Manager Magazin, stating

The speculation in the latest Manager Magazin article is without any foundation. The suggested impression that Volkswagen does not stick to its targets any more is wrong. Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft remains fully committed to its statements on the future business development of the Group. This was stated by the Volkswagen Group on Thursday.

What will the faithful say when the find out that the next Volkswagen Phaeton is based on a Golf platform Audi platform? Like it or not, that’s the way it’s going to be.

Edit: I mixed up the VW platforms. Turns out it will be the longitudinal version rather than the transverse MQB.

Since we live in the era of “economies of scale uber alles“, modular platforms will be one of the best ways to capture the benefits of this phenomenon. Volkswagen’s MQB platform (and MLB, for good measure) should be able to underpin damn near everything in the lineup with its Lego-like architecture.

If Automotive News is correct, the next Phaeton will no longer be a Bentley in drag, but a…well, a Golf Audi in drag. Sort of. British car rags used to mock the Audi TT as a “golf in lingere”, but the MQB/MLB platform will allow for different engine compartments and wheelbases, while one fixed measurement remaining throughout the platform. This is much more sophisticated than badge engineering. And we better get used to it.

Volkswagen unveiled their most important new platform, dubbed MQB (a German acronym for “Modular Transverse Matrix”). The MQB will underpin everything from the Up! to the next (European) Passat, and all points in between.

While the wheelbase can be adjusted to fit different sized vehicles, all motors, whether gas, diesel or hybrid, will use the same mounting points and transmissions. Photos appear to show a raised rear bench seat for better leg room, and stronger steel and more aluminum chassis components will help vehicles like the next Golf shed lots of weight.

The first MQB car will be the new Audi A3, which will debut this summer and be sold only as a sedan in the United States. The new MK7 Golf should follow after that, getting a reveal at September’s Paris Auto Show.
