The Subaru SVX, as I explained in the text of the previous SVX Junkyard Find, is one of those cars with a real-world price tag far, far lower than Internet Car Experts would have you believe. So low, in fact, that it is not at all difficult to find Subaru’s amazing last-gasp-of-80s-silliness car in wrecking yards. Here’s a ’96 I found in Denver a few weeks back.
I think the XT has the more appealingly bewildering Moon Base Japan controls, but the big 3.3 liter boxer six beats the XT6′s engine.
This car is pretty clean for a junkyard resident, and it ought to be with just 117K on the clock.
Subarus have become more reliable since the heyday of 80s/90s design madness, but they’re lost a lot of character on the way.

Living in Colorado, I find lots of junked Subarus. Today’s Junkyard Find, however, is the first Subaru SVX I’ve seen at The Crusher’s doorstep.
The SVX is one of those cars whose Internet Car Expert Perceived Value (ICEPV) tends to be far, far higher than its Motivated Seller Trying To Get Rid Of This Heap Value (MSTTGROTHV). You can find other cars with very high ICEPV-to-MSTTGROTHV ratios (e.g., Porsche 944, Dodge Omni GLHS, any 1960s Detroit station wagon), but none inspires quite the passion that you see when you start talking about the SVX. For example, the Living Waters Church of Subaru SVX that competed (if that’s the word) in several 24 Hours of LeMons races a few years back. When the online car forums caught word that an SVX qualified for the LeMons $500 budget rule, the bulk of the fevered responses were variations on the “NO WAY can you get an SVX for that cheap!!1!” and “It’s gonna PWN everything else on the track!!1!!” themes. Well, of course you can buy a basket-case SVX for dirt cheap, for the same reason you can buy an ugly BMW L7 for cheap: once they’re less than perfect, the cost of fixing them up is too high. As for dominating the race, the Living Waters SVX ran a total of maybe 25 laps in three races, breaking some difficult-to-fix component every hour or so (and while it was running, the ill-handling Subaru got its doors blown off by Neons and Cavaliers).
Right. So, let’s not hear any anguished Internet Car Expert talk about this “$10,000 car” ending up in the junkyard. Nobody was willing to pay just-above-scrap-price for it at auction, and so now it’s going to get picked over by junkyard buzzards and then crushed like it’s a Ford Contour with fire damage.
Of course, a 24-valve EG33 Subaru engine isn’t going to last long in a self-service junkyard; someone grabbed the long block right away.

Always hankered for a Citroen? The Subaru SVX is the closest thing we’ve gotten to one these past few decades. I find the resemblance to the XM more than coincidental. Which is a bit odd (or not) considering that the XM beat the SVX to the market by a few years (1989). And the XM was styled by Bertone, while arch-rival Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Ital design did the SVX. A case of great minds thinking alike? Or just the styling cliches de jour? Given the Subaru’s “aircraft-inspired glass-to-glass canopy” with the very unusual windows within windows, the SVX was actually more “Citroen” then the real thing. No wonder it’s such a curious oddity today.

A replacement for the almost-equally “progressive” XT Coupe (coming to CC soon), the SVX was an ambitious attempt to show the world that Subaru could do more than crank out funky little AWD wagons for Vermonters and Oregonians. It turned out to be too ambitious, especially at its price. The LSL version stickered at $28k in ’92 ($42k adjusted). That was problematic, given that it appeared in the middle of a recession. The SVX never lived up to Subaru’s sales expectations, and only some 14k of them were sold during its five years (’92-’97) on the US market.

The SVX’s engine was a further development of the boxer six that first showed up in the XT6 a few years earlier. Now it sported DOHC heads and 3.3 liters, but its 230 hp weren’t exactly earth shattering, even for the times (and price). And due to its struggle with weight (3600 lbs), performance was more garde than avant. Zero to sixty came in 7.3 seconds; the quarter mile in 15.4/92 mph. Obviously, the SVX wasn’t going to offer the performance to bucks ratio of a Mustang GT.

Subaru’s manual transmission wasn’t up to the H6′s twist, so it was automatic only. The word on the street is that the automatic is overstressed too, and very fragile. Buyer beware! And although conceived of as an AWD all-the-time coupe, Subaru sold some FWD versions during ’94-’95 in an effort to keep the price down. It was still too steep, and the market for cars like this was just melting away during the nineties.

It’s said that Subaru lost some $3k per SVX sold, or a total of $75 million. But a major part of its existence was to be a halo car, and in that respect, those numbers aren’t exactly terrible. The next Subaru coupe, the Toyabaru, will presumably hit the sporty coupe market closer to the sweet spot, with competitive prices. And the SVX will increasingly be seen as the unique oddity it always was, the Japanese Citroen.
