Now that Jaguar bestowed the XE upon the world, the automaker’s engineers and designers are turning toward updating the XF as the first generation draws closer to the end.

Autoblog reports the second-gen XF will likely be based upon the same iQ A1 platform used for the XE, along with losing a few pounds and gaining some new tech.

Under the bonnet, firepower will mostly remain the same, from four-pot diesels to supercharged V8, as well as the introduction of a PHEV variant. Rear- and all-wheel drive should still be around, as well as the choice between sedan and wagon.

Whatever happens, the new XF has some stiff competition waiting outside the assembly line, including the Audi A6, Infiniti Q70 and Volvo S90. Until that day, however, a few spy photos shall suffice.

20140914_170938Volvo hasn’t been particularly discreet about the next XC90. Plenty of spy photos have been taken of the car undergoing winter testing in Scandinavia and hot weather testing out in the American southwest, though I don’t believe that this exact combination of swirly camo wrap and plastic cladding has been seen before. From the Arizona plates on the car it was likely used for desert testing as well. The Volvo engineers testing the mule for radio frequency interference weren’t going out of their way to hide what they were doing either.

20140914_170954

They were in the parking lot of a drug store adjacent to a couple of radio transmission towers and the XC90 prototype was flanked by a couple of brand new XC60s with manufacturer’s plates. The location is less than a mile from my house, not far from where I’ve spotted camo’d prototypes before, and I just happened to be driving by. Is there anything more conspicuous than a prototype car covered by black and white camo graphics and bulky plastic cladding? It’s almost as though they want you to see these photos as the run-up to the actual reveal proceeds.

20140914_171048

That may be why the Volvo guys didn’t seem perturbed when I pulled into the lot, walked up and said, “testing the new 90 for RFI?” The oldest Nordic gentleman there smiled and said, “Yeah.” We chatted a bit about the radio farm in the neighborhood while his colleagues fiddled with what appeared to be breadboarded electronics in the cargo hold of one of the XC60s. They were so nice that I even asked if they minded if I took some photos, not that I had to. They graciously told me sure, so I took an abbreviated form of my usual sequence of shots, though I waited until after I was done to tell them that I was an editor here at TTAC.

20140914_171025

I’d have to see one side by side with the current XC90, and perhaps my perspective is skewed by the fact that it was next to the XC60s, but it seems to me to be pretty large, maybe even larger than the current car. A little bit of internet-fu shows that the new XC90, to be introduced late this year or early in 2016, will indeed be about 4 inches (100mm) longer than the outgoing crossover. Even without the smaller younger siblings next to it, it’s obviously a Volvo. Behind the ersatz BMW cladding up front you can see the Volvo grille, and the taillamps look ready for production in Gothenburg. Speaking of which, while photos of the production version of what is supposed to be the new XC90 have been leaked, the taillamps and headlights on this prototype are different than those on the leaked photos.

It’s not unheard of for car companies to continue to use development mules after those cars have been introduced to the public. A month after the Cadillac ELR was revealed at the 2013 NAIAS in Detroit, I spotted a camo’d ELR prototype in the parking structure at McCormick Place while I was there for the Chicago Auto Show. Maybe this XC90 is an early prototype that has been pressed into RFI testing, or maybe they were just using its cargo capacity to haul around equipment.

No matter what the engineers were doing with it, the seven passenger vehicle and de facto Volvo flagship will be the first built on Volvo’s all-new Scalable Platform Architecture, SPA, that will underpin much of the Volvo lineup, including several 60 and 40 series models, going forward. It will be powered by an engine from Volvo’s new family of four cylinder engines. The most powerful one in the XC90 will likely feature both an exhaust driven turbocharger and a mechanically driven supercharger and put out more than 400 hp. The new motor replaces a 3 liter engine in the current model. Expect diesel and hybrid versions as well.

I sure hope they test the Concept Estate, should they make it, in my neighborhood.

While our European friends are waiting for the next-generation Honda Civic Type-R to arrive next summer, one lucky spotter discovered a pre-production model tackling the switchbacks of Eastern Europe not too long ago.

Carscoops reports a friend of theirs sent in two photos of the 2015 Type-R as it was shooting a promo in Rijeka, Croatia, located two hours to the southwest from the nation’s capital, Zagreb.

This particular Type-R — later spotted on a trailer in Slovenia — lacks the concept version’s massive front wheel arches and matching set of front and rear air ducts — as seen at the 2014 Geneva Auto Show — yet maintains the large rear spoiler/LED tail lamp combo.

The Type-R will receive power from a 2-liter VTEC turbo-four punching out 280 horsepower through the front wheels when it begins production next year.

The Mazda CX-5 is doing well for itself among critics and customers alike, but like anyone else, the automaker has some ideas on how the crossover can keep its edge.

Autoblog reports spy cameras caught a lightly camo’d CX-5 testing somewhere in Europe with tape covering parts of its face and backside. The head and rear lamps have been revised, along with the grill, and the side mirrors boast integrated turn signals.

Expect to see everything unmasked around the Los Angeles Auto Show this November prior to going on sale the following autumn for the 2016 model year.

Just after we got word of an SAE-certified Charger Hellcat, prototypes have been spied testing on Detroit roads.

The 707-horsepower Charger will become the world’s most powerful sedan if put into production. Even though its arch-rival, the Chevrolet SS, will get a manual transmission starting in the 2015 model year, I’m becoming increasingly comfortable with the idea of an automatic only Charger Hellcat. The 8-speed automatic is not only a great gearbox, but I love the idea of perfect, launch control starts at every occassion. It’s better than the alternative: wrapping the thing around a telephone pole.

I was already in a wagon state of mind when, driving home on the Lodge freeway after a stop in downtown Detroit, I spotted a camo’d car with manufacturer’s plates up ahead. It was some kind of hatchback or wagon and it had a Blue Oval on the hatch/tailgate so it was undoubtedly a Ford.

As I passed it, it was obviously a five door wagon. I couldn’t get a great look at the front end because of traffic and because it peeled off onto I-94 but from what I caught in the rear view mirror it looked like the new Fusion’s Aston Martinish front end. Checking what the wagon version of the Fusion’s European cousin, the Mondeo, looks like, and comparing it to what I saw and the one photo that I was able to shoot, I’m pretty sure that this is close to the same car. From the way the hatch splits the taillights and the location of the exhausts, and from what I can make out of the contouring on the mystery car’s flanks, I’ll go out on a limb and say that this is the new Fusion station wagon. Other pics of the new Mondeo Estate fit my recollection of what the car looked like. What say you?

As you can see, the car is non-descript in that special Acura sort of way The faux-BMW Hoffmeister kink is there at the rear window, while the front is indistinguishable from the rest of the lineup. The interior looks well finished, but again, there’s little to distinguish it from the rest of the pack. Tomorrow, we’ll get a proper look at the RLX when it’s unveiled at the L.A. Auto Show.
