Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn handed Pope Benedict XVI (nee Joseph Aloysius Ratzinger) a new, fully sustainable electric popemobile.
It is unclear whether the public will see an emission-free pope. According to a Renault press release, the holy EV is for use when the Pope is travelling at his summer residence Castel Gandolfo.

Actually, two popemobiles were received.

The first one is white with the Papal coat of arms depicted on the doors. Based on the Kangoo Maxi Z.E., it measures 4.6 meters in length and 1.8 meters in width. It is powered by a 44kW (60hp) electric motor and a lithium-ion battery which is good for an average NEDC combined-cycle range of 170km.

The design of the other vehicle is very similar to that of the first, although its blue livery features a white and yellow stripe along each flank. It is for use by the Corps of Gendarmerie Corps of Vatican City for the Pope’s security.

The two cars were converted by the French coachbuilder Gruau.

The pope usually travels  in a white popemobile,  which is based on the Mercedes-Benz M-Class. Possibly he keeps it for pangs of range anxiety. But with a direct line to God …

While The Pope Goes Green, Mortals Get Gas http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2011/06/while-the-pope-goes-green-mortals-get-gas/ http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2011/06/while-the-pope-goes-green-mortals-get-gas/#comments Tue, 21 Jun 2011 16:24:34 +0000 http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/?p=399743

The Pope is working on his green creds. When the German Pope Benedikt XVI will come to Germany in September, he will wave at the faithful from a plug-in hybrid. Made in Germany, of course.  Mercedes is putting the finishing touches on a new popemobile. Based on the new M-Klasse, it is powered by a 60 hp hybrid module. The lithium io battery will supposedly be rechargeable in 60 minute, allowing the Pope to travel for 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) on heavenly electrical power alone. Once depleted, the ICE kicks in.

Why no pure plug-in? Deranged-anxiety. In case of an attack, the car must be “escape-capable,” as Gemany’s Wirtschaftswoche reports.

In the meantime, mere mortals are lacking divine inspiration. Says USA Today:

“Despite months of high gas prices, a bevy of new fuel-stingy cars with conventional gas engines may be eating into sales of pricier gas-electric hybrids.”

“Sales of high-mileage, high-value conventional compacts such as the Hyundai Elantra (shown above), Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze are hot, while hybrid sales have stagnated.”

Why? Filthy lucre.

“Even with the fuel savings, it doesn’t make sense to buy a hybrid” for many buyers, says J.D. Power Senior Manager Mike Omotoso. “This year, we had $4 gas (in many cities) but we saw the introduction of compacts that get 40 mpg. All of these cars are considerably cheaper than hybrids.”

Pope Benedict XVI Shopping For Electric Popemobile http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2010/12/pope-benedict-xvi-shopping-for-electric-popemobile/ http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2010/12/pope-benedict-xvi-shopping-for-electric-popemobile/#comments Thu, 02 Dec 2010 04:00:21 +0000 http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/?p=375286
According to Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, the Warlord of Vatican City, His Holiness “would certainly prefer an electric popemobile to a traditional, petroleum-powered one.” I suggest the 1976 Sebring-Vanguard Citicar!
Of course, Benedict VXI might be more of an old-school electric-car guy, in which case he’ll want something a little more classic than the Citicar. How about a B&Z Electric Car Electra King?
