2014 Hennessey Venom

Should you happen to be in Cheswick, Penn. next Sunday, you could be the new owner of a 2014 Hennessey Venom GT, or a Ferrari once owned by a Penguin.

Constantine & Pletcher owner and auctioneer Dan Pletcher says to TTAC he was putting together a single, nationwide auction with a handful of consignors, with the Venom GT — whose owner was said not to be happy with the vehicle — having been in his sights for a couple of months. He adds this may be the first time a Venom as new as the one put up by the owner is hitting the public auction block.

The Venom — one of 20 produced in 2014 — participated in the Concept Lawn exhibition at last year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, is the only white model in the United States, and has only 745 miles on the odometer. Pletcher conservatively expects the exotic will leave the block for anywhere between $700,000 and $900,000.

Another vehicle of interest is the 2012 Ferrari 458 Italia once owned by Pittsburgh Penguin centerman Eugeni Malkin. Pletcher explained how this celebrity-owned Ferrari arrived in his auction house:

[The Ferrari] came through a friend of mine in the auto auction business that deals with [Malkin’s] agent. The Pittsburgh market is not really the best market for selling higher-end sportscars and performance cars… our roads are not the best for these type of vehicles.

Instead of placing the Ferrari on the showroom floor, Pletcher and the parties involved decided to add the car to the auction. He believes the Italia would fetch between a conservative estimate of $190,000 and $225,000 once the final bid is accepted, though the bidding could end much higher based on Malkin’s star power.

Three other cars set to join the Venom GT and 458 Italia include a numbers-matching 1957 Ford Thunderbird E-Code — referencing the roadster’s 270-horsepower 312-cubic inch V8 with dual four-barrel carb and automatic transmission — a numbers-matching 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS convertible, and a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air with only 9,000 miles on the odometer. The trio are from a collection of 30 cars Pletcher plans to sell over the next two years.

The auction will be held in Cheswick, Penn. June 28 beginning at noon Eastern.

E10 + 100 Percent Gasoline at the Pump

With one attempt shot down thus far, two U.S. senators are issuing a standalone bill to reduce the use of corn-based ethanol at the pump.

According to Hemmings Daily, the Corn Ethanol Mandate Elimination Act of 2015 introduced by Dianne Feinstein of California and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania would call for a modification of the Renewable Fuel Standard that would push other biofuels, such as biodiesel and cellulosic ethanol, over corn-based ethanol. Feinstein explains:

Our infrastructure has a ceiling for the amount of corn ethanol that can be used, and we’re rapidly approaching it. Companies are physically unable to blend more corn ethanol into gasoline without causing problems for many gas stations and older automobiles.

The Feinstein/Toomey bill joins four others seeking similar action, including three in Pennsylvania, Oregon and Hawaii that would seek to eliminate the mandate of E10 sales altogether.

Meanwhile, ethanol supporters like the Renewable Fuel Association, the National Corn Growers Association and the Advanced Ethanol Council oppose the bill as an assault on the RFS, and call upon the Environmental Protection Agency to increase ethanol use further, despite the EPA’s acknowledgment regarding the limits to blending ethanol with gasoline.

Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell (D) has not given up on his dream of adding toll booths on Interstate 80, a freeway that serves as a vital commercial link between New York and Chicago. On October 30, state officials filed an official memorandum to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) reopening the application for permission to toll the 311 mile route in order to help balance the state’s budget. “Without tolls on I-80, state lawmakers and the administration would have to plug a $473 million gap in next year’s budget, and that gap will steadily widen,” Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Chief Executive Joe Brimmeier said in a statement.

In July 2008, the FHWA explained that the governor’s plan did not appear to meet the requirements of federal law for conversion of a federal interstate into a toll road. The state’s new filing with federal transportation officials included further details on the proposal, such as planned locations for electronic toll booths and an extensive financial analysis. The deal, authorized at the state level by Act 44 of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, faces an uncertain future as a number of key political players remain unconvinced that the Turnpike Commission should expand its reach to previously untolled roads.

“This is the same Turnpike Commission that has been the backdrop for several scandals and a slew of indictments,” US Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (R-Howard) explained in a statement. “Act 44 is a cover-up of years of mismanagement of taxpayer funds and the perpetuation of an antiquated and corrupt Turnpike Commission. This is not fair to the taxpayers in Pennsylvania — not just along the I-80 corridor, but in the commonwealth as a whole.”

An opinion poll taken last year found that 63 percent of voters agreed with Thompson’s assessment. A coalition of business groups, the Alliance to Stop I-80 Tolling, formed to coordinate efforts to block the tolling plan.

“There are simply better options that will generate more money with less hardship,” coalition co-chairman Vince Matteo said in a statement. “The bottom line is that once gantries are up on I-80, local businesses and communities will be crippled and a harsh inflationary rise will be felt throughout the entire commonwealth economy.”

A Grove City College study calculated last month that a 10 cent gas tax increase would raise $600 million at a cost of just 0.5 cents per mile for an average automobile — far cheaper than the per-mile rate of a toll road that requires expensive overhead to operate (view study).
