Most of the big news at the 2015 New York International Auto Show took place on the first day of the media preview, with the introduction of the Cadillac CT6, production bound Lincoln Continental and Honda Civic concepts and an all-new Chevy Malibu, as well as the Porsche 911 fighting McLaren 570S. With that in mind it’s easy to understand why the press conferences for Elio Motors and Lyons Motors were relatively sparsely attended, being held on the second press day, though the two startups faced different obstacles in getting attention. Elio’s stand at the show was with the trucks on the lower level of the Javits Center, away from most of the cars, and reporters, upstairs. Lyons Motors’ head Kevin Lyons held his press conference in the concourse on the main level, but it was easy to miss as they had no car on display, just an empty piece of carpet and a lectern.

Both startups have gotten at least their share of skepticism but the two press conferences demonstrated, at least to me, the difference between a serious, albeit longshot, effort to bring something new to the automotive market, and something that’s more like complete vaporware.

Paul Elio at the New York Auto Show

Paul Elio at the New York Auto Show

There are some similarities. You have to love the romance of someone starting a car company and naming it after themselves. Henry Ford and Enzo Ferrari did it, so why not Paul Elio and Kevin Lyons? There are also some major differences. Elio is trying to reinvent the people’s car, inexpensive to buy and own, mostly for commuting. The Lyons Lyons LM2 Streamliner is aimed at a much more rarefied market, something more suitable to the red carpet. Jay-Z and Shaquille O’Neil were mentioned as being interested in the million dollar plus 1,700 horsepower, 290 mph carbon fiber hypercar that will not have a conventional wiring harness but some kind of single networking cable that will work wirelessly (why then have even one cable?).

Click here to view the embedded video.

Kevin Lyons explained not having their prototype at the media preview as being due to the car not meeting the company founders’ standards. The fiberglass and foam pushmobile they finally displayed during the public days does indeed look a little bit rough, and apparently the mockup was draped for much of the time but Road & Track’s Robert Sorokanich got photos. The quality of the show car and Kevin Lyons’ stilted interview with Jalopnik’s Michael Ballaban don’t fill me with confidence about the quality of the parts they will produce in the carbon fiber autoclave that Lyons said is being installed so they can make the chassis and bodywork in-house.

lyons-motor-car-lm2--3w

Lyons’ rambling off-the-cuff presentation during the press preview hit his bullet points, but never offered any real technical details which also didn’t make me feel like it was a serious effort. Lyons does have some experience as a fabricator and drag racer, so putting aside the BS about how the car will be wired (“no fuses, no circuit breakers” – yeah, that sounds safe), it’s possible that they might produce some kind of coachbuilt car based around an existing carbon fiber tub for something like a Daytona or LeMans prototype racer. However, I strongly doubt that it’s going to be competitive technologically or dynamically with the new McLaren 570S, to be sold at a bit more than 1/10th the price, let alone compete with 7 figure hypercars like the McLaren P1 or Porsche 918. It’s also not going to be ready nine months from now as Lyons says it will, at least not if they’re still at the pushmobile styling buck stage. If they couldn’t get the styling prototype ready in time for the NY show, I don’t think they’ll any more likely meet that nine month deadline.

lyons-motor-car-lm2--10w

I don’t want to diminish Lyons’ skills as a fabricator but making carbon fiber parts isn’t as simple as having an autoclave installed. There are a limited number of companies capable of producing large structural CFRP parts and there’s a learning curve involved. Much of BMW’s i8 and i3 EV program involves a billion dollar investment in an international supply chain for those cars’ carbon fiber parts. Ford is using Ontario supplier and race car builder Multimatic to fabricate the new Ford GT’s carbon tub and bodywork, not fabricating it in-house.

At his press conference, Lyons billed the LM2 Streamliner as “America’s Bugatti”. Of course if anyone at the Volkswagen Group thought that Lyons will actually build even one LM2, their lawyers would contact them about Lyons’ use of their Bugatti trademark.

Paul Elio is a little more practiced and polished at giving a press conference than Kevin Lyons but Elio Motor’s appearance at the NYIAS was actually the first time they’ve had a press conference or even a display at a major auto show. Their stand at the NY show was part of the road tour to major events that they’ve been doing to get their prototypes and the project in front of the public. For the most part they’ve been hitting things like the Woodward Dream Cruise or Daytona Bike Week and this is the first time, to my knowledge, that they’ve had a display up at a big corporate auto show media shindig. They were also on hand for the public days of the show. Unlike Lyons Motors, for their part Elio had an actual operational vehicle on display, the P4 prototype that I was able to test drive last summer. They also had some real news, not all of it great, though their transparency about what wasn’t good news encourages me about the project.

lyons-motor-car-lm2--9w

First the bad, well, so-so, news. Not long ago Elio released video of their purpose built IAV designed three cylinder engine being tested on the dyno. I asked Paul Elio if it met their power and torque benchmarks and he gave me a straightforward, “No.” Elio, who perpetually smiles, continued that everything was within 5% of their targets, within normal developmental range as he described it. Translated to numbers, 5% means that they were less than 2.8 horsepower shy of their 55 hp projection.

Also regarding transparency, guring his press conference, Paul Elio mentioned how their primary investor, real estate developer Stu Lichter owned the former GM assembly plant in Shreveport, LA, which they are leasing to build their $6,800 reverse trike. That sounded at odds with the published fact that the Caddo Parish government bought the plant and leased it to Lichter’s company. Lichter was at the press conference in New York so I asked him about the real estate deal and he was forthcoming with the fact that what Elio said wasn’t technically true. Lichter’s deal with the county is a lease to purchase contract that ends with a $1 balloon payment, what he described as a distinction without a difference.

Concerning other investors Elio is now describing his company as the second most successful crowdfunding effort ever, after the Apple Watch. So far the company has over 40,000 paid reservations and when I asked Mr. Elio how many canceled after their recent announcement that production won’t start until next year, he said “in the low hundreds”.

The company is also now soliciting equity investments from whom the Securities and Exchange Commission considers to be “accredited” investors. When I told Paul Elio that soliciting equity investors from the public, and describing product deposits as investments, all before starting production, might bring up uncomfortable associations with Preston Tucker’s problems with the SEC, he said that the actual investments will be regulated under the 2012 JOBS act and that the solicitation of individual investors is in response to one of the more common questions they get at public showings of the trike being about investment opportunities.

The company is still waiting on their application for $200 million in financing from Department of Energy’s revived Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing loan program, which provided Tesla with $465 million in loans, and even more to Ford and Nissan. Tesla paid off its ATVM loan and Ford and Nissan have been current with their payments. Less successful was the more than half billion dollar loan to Fisker Automotive.

Regarding the Shreveport plant’s equipment, the surplus of which is being sold off by Comau as part of the startup’s financing, Paul Elio told me that so far they’ve sold “millions of dollars” worth of equipment, most of it for more than their anticipated prices. The loans for that equipment are still being paid off on schedule. The plant was one of GM’s most modern, having been only recently renovated, and Elio told me that the giant automaker has had people in the plant going over what they would like to buy back. Elio will only be using about 1/3rd of the plant floor space and related equipment, hence the surplus.

On the regulatory front, Elio Motors has had some success at the state level getting legislation enacted now in 26 states that carves out regulatory space for “autocycles”, enclosed three wheel vehicles. The company appears to be trying to avoid three-wheelers’ legal status as motorcycles requiring Elio drivers to wear helmets while at the same time making sure that any potential competitors would have to meet standards of construction and safety more or less established by Elio. Lousiana’s U.S. senator, David Visser, has introduced the Autocycle Safety Act at the federal level that would enable NHTSA to promulgate appropriate regulations.

From Elio’s press release on Senate Bill 685:

The legislation provides that autocycle manufacturers must immediately meet certain safety standards until such time as the NHTSA can promulgate final safety regulations covering autocycles.  To be eligible for the new classification of autocycle, the vehicle must qualify as meeting Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)—not limited to, but including most standards for passenger vehicles under 10,000 lbs.  Some of the requirements will be FMVSS for seat belts and seat belt anchors, child restraints, roof crush and meet upper interior impact standards. Autocycles also must have front and side curtain airbag protection.  In addition to numerous safety standards needed for qualification, autocycles must meet FMVSS for motorcycles as well.  The legislation also requires the continued investigation of additional standards appropriate for autocycles, developing additional safety standards for these vehicles.

About those crash standards. In the past TTAC readers have raised concerns about the crash safety of the Elio trike’s outrigger, motorcycle fendered front wheels, particularly how they would affect the vehicle’s safety in the new partial offset front collision test. I asked Paul Elio about that and he said that there were indeed some issues in crash testing the reverse trike because of the design, though they have more to do with the side offset test, which uses an angled ram hitting the side of the car. Apparently they can’t get the sled to hit the narrow passenger compartment without first getting deflected by the wheel. Elio said that they are working with regulators to come up with an appropriate way to implement that test.

Regarding the partial offset front crash test that involves the ram hitting the front of the car but to the side, not on center, Elio says that the fuselage is so narrow that the partial offset test might completely miss the trike’s front crush structure. In that case, energy would be absorbed as the ram hits the tire, and then the wheel and suspension would likely rip off the vehicle. While it doesn’t sound pretty, it also doesn’t sound particularly unsafe. In a conventional envelope body design it seems to me that more energy would be transmitted to the passenger cell as the bodywork around the wheel and suspension crushes.

A few new details on the Elio vehicle itself were released. The automatic transmission that will be offered will be a dual clutch unit based on the manual transmission used in the Elio trike. The instrument panel has been redesigned, and it reflects Elio Motors goal of using as many off the shelf components as they can. The new IP uses almost all existing supplier tooling, but by replacing the speedo and tach needles with discs and covering most of those gauges with brushed aluminum covers, they’ve come up with something that’s attractive, modern looking and not just the same old gauges.

IMG_0669

When I drove the prototype, while vision to the rear is fine with the two side mirrors, there’s no back window and even if there was one, the tandem seating means a conventional windshield mounted rear view mirror won’t really work. As I said in my review, you can see behind well enough with the mirrors, but psychologically most people would like some kind of view directly out the back. I asked Paul Elio if they were considering offering a rear facing camera and display as standard equipment and he said, “Well, with the cameras costing about $10 today, yeah, that’s a possibility”.

Alternatively, rear cameras would be installed with other accessories and options post production, in one of the company’s seven proposed fulfillment centers. The way it is supposed to work, customers will order cars from a factory store. Other than transmissions and exterior colors, they’ll be made identically at the factory and the fulfillment centers will have cars in stock. Options and accessories will be swapped out at the fulfillment center, with the replaced parts shipped back to the factory, and the cars will be trucked to the local factory store by the next morning for delivery.

At the Elio announcement, when they opened it up for Q&A I asked Paul Elio when they’d have one of their own engines in a prototype car and he said that would happen only after they built about 30 engines for validation, with some used for destructive testing. At the Lyons announcement, between the lack of a car and Kevin Lyons’ literally unbelievable hype I couldn’t come up with a question that wouldn’t have gone past mere skepticism into mockery. Like I said, I like the romance of someone starting up their own car company so I kept my mouth shut, lest I rain on Mr. Lyons time in the spotlight. I don’t know how professional it is for a writer to ask, “Isn’t that complete and utter bullshit?” I will, however, make what I think is not a very bold prediction: Elio Motors will bring their trike to production before we see the first running LM2 Streamliner prototype from Lyons Motors.

I was wrong about the 2015 Camry: it’s a handsome family sedan. But not for us, for the Russians.

2015-Toyota-Camry-4

This.

This is how you mildly refresh an existing model.

Yes, Toyota made a uniquely ugly 2015 Camry for us Yankees.  They styled to the lowest common denominator (i.e. every frickin’ cliche in a modern designer’s toolkit) while the “Global” 2015 Camry has an upmarket presense.  It apes the price point where Less is More, the place where Audi survives and thrives.

Sure, the Global 2015 Camry is no Audi. But it’s an object of desire relative to our imminent future of seeing the US-spec model on every highway, clogging our pores with mindless amounts of DLO FAIL for no good reason. Even the fascias are quite fetching, forgoing our Camry’s fake-Audi-Lexus schnoz.

As expected, TTAC’s Best and Brightest called it: the 2015 Camry has Chernobyl-grade DLO FAIL.

Or maybe that’s heavily tinted glass?

I consider myself lucky I’m not attending the NYIAS, this would make my head go explodey all over the show floor.

No transportation designer, wannabe like me or otherwise, wants to see that gigantizoid of a hunk of black plastic go into production.  The years of thankless hard work, the brutal cost of design school on your wallet/social life, etc shouldn’t turn into this.

There was nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with the 2014 Camry’s greenhouse: it was sleek-ish and a completely DLO FAIL free zone before the redesign.  It was a beautiful thing. And now it’s gone.

Thanks for reading, I hope you (can still) have a lovely week.

This years New York Auto Show marks the end of car show season – we won’t be treated to another one until the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Like the Geneva show that preceded it, this one will be crossover and hybrid heavy, with a sprinkling of American muscle thrown in for good measure.

Acura MDX – Acura’s venerable Japanese alternative to the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 gets a new look, a slightly revamped V6 engine and the same SH-AWD system as the previous generation. An FWD only model will be added as a concession to Sunbelt states, but it’s hard to think of a real reason to buy one over the rest of the competition. Perhaps our own CJinSD can help us out.

Audi A3 Sedan – A massively important product for Audi, the A3 sedan will replace the beloved but slow selling hatchback, and provide Audi with a rival to the Mercedes-Benz CLA and BMW 320i. Ironically, it will be about the same size as the B5 A4 that captured the hearts of Americans over a decade ago.

Buick LaCrosse/Regal – Buick’s two core sedans get cosmetic refreshes and some minor changes under the skin. Not much else is known.

Cadillac CTS – They ATS may have been ready to take on the world according to Cadillac’s ad campaign, but the CTS is going to be an important car for Cadillac in China. The toned-down styling, which doesn’t sit well with Chinese consumers, is the best example of how the car was tailored to local tastes. The big news over here is the twin-turbo V6, making 420 horsepower.

Chevrolet Camaro – A refresh for Chevrolet’s muscle car is due, while rumors of some performance upgrades continue to swirl.

Dodge Durango – Dodge’s big SUV gets an 8-speed automatic and some styling tweaks, to match its sibling, the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Honda Odyssey – A refresh for Honda’s minivan, including a long awaited 6-speed automatic transmission.

Infiniti QX60 Hybrid – The JX35 is no more. Instead, we have the QX60, along with a new hybrid model using a 2.5L 4-cylinder supercharged engine to eeke out a few more miles per gallon from Infiniti’s three-row crossover.

Jeep Cherokee – The most controversial debut of the show will be the all-new, car-based Jeep Cherokee. A 3.2L V6, a 9-speed automatic and some new variants will be shown in the flesh.

Kia Soul – Kia’s popular compact hatchback will get its first redesign, and the new car will be a tough act to follow, given the success of the current Soul. No word on powertrains or styling, but this one is expected to continue using the Rio platform.

Range Rover Sport – The 3/4 size Range Rover makes its debut, with styling and powertrains cribbed from its big brother – expect the 3.0L supercharged V6 and 5.0L V8 to be offered.

Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG – Remember that sweet Mercedes A45 AMG hatchback that debuted in Geneva? Our hostility to hatchbacks means that we’re getting a sedan version of that same car. Essentially it is the A45’s running gear with a CLA body on top.

Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid – The QX60 Hybrid, in some dressed-down duds.

Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid – Subaru hasn’t released any details on their first hybrid, save for a photo of a green XV Crosstrek.

Toyota Highlander – ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The Range Rover Sport is set to get a total redesign later this year, but pictures of the new car have leaked prior to its New York Auto Show debut. Just as we expected, it looks like a full-size Range Rover got shrunk in the wash.

Expect residual values of the current model to take a serious dive once the new car goes on sale. God forbid anybody should be seen driving the previous generation. An easy giveaway will be the sagging air suspensions, which the new owners will not be able to afford to fix, due to the exorbitant shop rates charged by JLR dealers.

The outrageous indifference, mixed with distate enthusiasm shown by TTACers for our Chicago Auto Show Video led us to think that it would be a good idea to do one for the New York Auto Show. Unfortunately, Vodka McBigbra’s dental emergency forced me to bounce out of the show halfway through. The video crew was left with an absolute mishmash of first-take cynicism and random Asians wandering through the shots.

In his autobiography, Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash notes that Steven Adler’s drumming in the sessions for “Rocket Queen” was so coked-up and arrhythmic that producer Mike Clink had to sit down and splice together the whole track from random sections. LeftLane’s producer Matt Sargent found himself in about the same situation here. Is this video as good as “Rocket Queen”? Of course not.

Therefore, please accept my apologies for even suggesting that you watch it. And I’d like to apologize to GM, as well, particularly to the fellow who asked me to “stop touching the Enclave” during the “wave rider” segment about halfway through. Thanks!

The New York Auto Show is where the World Car Of The Year awards were announced, and the past few years have seen small, fuel-efficient cars take home the crown. The Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen Polo, Volkswagen Golf and Mazda2 have won in the past few years, and 2012 is no different, with the Volkswagen Up! taking home the crown. The Up! beat the BMW 3-Series and Porsche 911 for the honors, but at least we’ll get a chance to buy those two (well, some of us…).

A mid-cycle refresh for the 2013 Ram 1500 brings about some interesting changes. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 is now available, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission (dubbed the TorqueFlite8). But wait, there’s more.

Also available is a new air suspension, a first for a 1500 pickup. Ride height can be adjusted for easy access, improved fuel economy and to facilitate off-roading. Electric grille shutters, a UConnect infotainment system, electric power steering and an engine start-stop system are also included.

The success of Ford’s V6 F-150 trucks has proved that there is a market for a V6 pickup, so long as it’s a good one. The Ecoboost and Ford’s 3.7L V6 are fine engines in their own right, and the Pentastar has been getting a lot of love lately, with TTAC hoping on the bandwagon as well. A 5.7L Hemi V8 will also be available, but it may not be the automatic choice anymore. Perhaps a V6 truck shoot-out is in order. Over to you, Mr. Dykes.

Volkswagen purists rejoice; here’s a European Passat wagon with a 2.0L diesel, a DSG gearbox, all-wheel drive and the prestige of not being an American-built VW.

The AllTrack is officially a concept for our purposes, but VW will sell you one if you live in the Schengen Zone. Look for an American version to have a gasoline option as well as the 140 horsepower TDI motor. The AllTrack would conceivably be a strong rival to the Subaru Outback while also helping VW out with the big gaping crossover hole in their lineup. I wonder if they’ll offer it with a manual?

The biggest sticking point here seems to be that the AllTrack is ostensibly built in Europe, off of a car that isn’t sold here. Will it be imported or will Chattanooga somehow be retrofitted to build a unique model?

The closest I’ve ever come to dying in a car was at the wheel of a Toyota Avalon, and I credit the nice, long wheelbase, stable handling and strong V6 engine for helping me avoid a major catastrophe. The new 2013 model, with its swoopy styling, looks like something that just might get you into trouble rather than keeping you out of it.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The pictures tell the whole story of the revamped Avalon, with a totally different look both inside and out. Power numbers for the 3.5L V6 weren’t disclosed, but it should be at a minimum equal to the 268 horsepower in the Camry V6. A Sport mode button will be featured, as well as a whole suite of active safety features, including 10 airbags, blind spot monitoring with cross-traffic detection and a pre-collision system. Personally, I think the sloping roofline is the most interesting feature. Is it a concession to aesthetics while compromising rear headroom (ala the Mercedes-Benz CLS) or has Toyota avoided that problem? Previous complaints from more mature buyers (i.e. the Avalons target market) about this trend has me wondering.

Subaru debuted their new compact crossover and their refreshed Legacy and Outback. As you’re probably already aware, the changes to Subaru’s mid size mainstays are more than superficial. However, they’re not very dramatic.

The new DOHC Boxer 4 is good for a 1mpg improvement on the highway. The biggest news from an enthusiast standpoint is that the 2.5GT model is making a quiet exit. Another manual transmission notes the dust.

The Subaru XV compact crossover slots in where the previous Impreza-based Outback Sport once fit. Boasting the same ground clearance of the Outback with a smaller footprint, the XV should suit the northeastern SAAB replacement buyer quite nicely.

Nissan’s upscale Infiniti cars can only be bought outside of Japan, but most of the cars are made in Japan. That will change, said Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn in New York.

Infiniti cars are produced at Nissan plants in the Tochigi and Fukuoka Prefectures of Japan. Nissan/Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn said he will move more Infiniti production outside of Japan, The Nikkei [sub] reports. Earlier this year, Nissan started producing the Infiniti JX SUV in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Citing the strong yen as a reason, CEO Carlos Ghosn said that more Infiniti production will be moved to ‘North America,’ and China. While talking to reporters after a speech, Ghosn said:

“We are suffering in that most Infiniti products are made in Japan. We have most sourcing in Japan, but none of the sales. Obviously this is not the right system. We should produce cars where we sell them…. North America is a potential base, and China.”

Infiniti production in China had long been rumored. This would be the first time that Infiniti production in the Middle Kingdom has been officially acknowledged, indicating a successful conclusion of the negotiations with Nissan joint venture partner Dongfeng.

“We’re going to make announcements soon about a new base for sourcing for Infiniti,” Ghosn promised.  ”

Nissan has already started moving the global HQ of Infiniti to Hong Kong.

A year ago, Carlos Ghosn announced that Nissan is aiming for 8 percent global market share by 2016. This morning in New York, delivering the keynote address at the New York Auto Show, Ghosn said it again:

“We can achieve 8 percent global market share by 2016.”

After a pause, he continued: “Whenever I state this 8 percent goal, I get some skeptical looks.”

Whenever he says that, people do get that look. Then they answer, or think: “Nissan? You surely must be talking about Nissan and Renault, right?”

Wrong. He meant Nissan a year ago, and he was talking only about Nissan today. Nissan is well on its way. Currently Nissan is at 4.8 million vehicles worldwide, or 6.4 percent of the total global market. Ghosn plans to sell 200,000 units more in the U.S. alone with 5 new volume models.

Nissan will ”target  millions of people joining the middle classes around the world” by reviving Datsun for low cost cars.

“And before you ask – no, we do not currently plan to bring Datsun back to the U.S.”

The steamy erotica novel “50 Shades of Grey” is apparently inciting the passions of housewives across Manhattan. Good to know that Lexus has something for the good people of Boca Raton, Florida, in the form of the new Lexus ES.

The ES350, with its 6-speed automatic gearbox and 3.5L V6 is a restyled, lighter version of the usual ES. A car that gets dumped on by those whose ego outweighs their real-world experience. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it achieves its goals competently.

The big news this year is a new ES Hybrid, dubbed the ES300h. Using the 2.5L 4-cylinder and Hybrid Synergy Drive from the Camry Hybrid, the ES300H will supposedly hit 40 mpg combined – let’s see how the ES and the upcoming Lincoln MKZ Hybrid square off against one another. New Lexus family styling both inside and out means a GS-esque look for the exterior, and the slightly infuriating Lexus Remote Touch controller that will be a challenge for less tech-oriented members of the AARP – and believe me, there are many who appreciated the ES350 precisely because it didn’t have an iDrive or MMI stalk.

We all know that the new Acura RLX will have a V6 and a neat SH-AWD system using electric motors and such – but how about the budget model, that revives the long-dormant four-wheel steering system from the Prelude, once known as 4WS!

The all-new direct injection V6 displaces 3.5L and makes in excess of 370 horsepower. While one electric motor provides a hybrid system linked to the V6, two others, one at each rear wheel, act as an all-wheel drive system. Similar to the NSX, the system can add power to the wheels independently, helping the car rotate through turns by applying varying amounts of torque.

A standard model without the SH-AWD system can be had with 310 horsepower and the aforementioned 4WS system, now dubbed “Precision All-Wheel Steer”. This system electronically adjusts the toe angle of the rear wheels. Two screens will feature in the cabin, a 7-inch touch screen that controls vehicle functions, as well as an 8-inch display screen.

Forward Collision Warning,  Lane Departure Warning, Collision Mitigation Braking System and lane-keeping assist all help on the gadget front, while an AcuraLink telematics system with stolen vehicle tracking will be standard.

And yes, this concept is 100 percent accurate; imagine it with the rims from the current RL, and you’ll have the car that I saw back at Honda HQ in January.

My girlfriend is really excited for tonight’s debut of “The Real Housewives of Vancouver”, and I bet that the Real Housewives already hankering for a new ride before the 36-month lease on their current GL350 BlueTecs are up. Here’s more questionably-built ostentatiousness to satiate their vapid souls.

I do have an affinity for the Mercedes-Benz GL because it can be had with the BlueTec diesel engine – a good number of them (apparently as high as 50 percent in Canada) are sold with the oil burner. I imagine that isn’t the case in the United States. The BlueTec 3.0L V6 diesel now makes 240 horsepower and 455 lb-ft.

Two gasoline V8s will also be offered, both 4.6L twin-turbo V8s. The GL450 makes 362 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque while the GL550 will make 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, the better to get to hot yoga before that bitch in the Range Rover Sport steals your parking spot. A 7-speed automatic puts power to the ground. A radar-based collision avoidance system works at triple digit speeds, so you can yak on your phone without worrying about human life.

The GL350 starts at $62,445, and goes up to $86,175 for the GL550.

The ancient Chevrolet Impala will finally get a replacement, in the form of the 2014 Impala shown above. The newest GM full-size will get a V6 engine, setting it apart from the 2013 Malibu. An eAssist 4-cylinder will be the base engine.

The 2.4L Ecotec with eAssist will make 182 horsepower while returning 35 mpg on the highway. The all-new 2.5L Ecotec 4-cylinder making 195 horsepower will also be available, but the jewel of the lineup will be the 3.6L V6 making 303 horsepower – a powertrain that really shines even in the current Impala. All engines will be mated to a 6-speed automatic.

Sharing a platform with the Buick Lacrosse and Cadillac XTS, the Impala should be a huge step forward in refinement for the nameplate, with 4-cylinders featuring an active noise cancellation system to help keep noise down. GM has said that fleet sales will be cut for this generation of car. Our New York Auto Show coverage will begin today, and hopefully we can get pictures of the car in a shade that isn’t black!

A 2.5L 4-cylinder makes 182 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. A 270 horsepower 3.5L V6 is also available – but if it’s anything like the engine in the Infiniti JX, the CVT and VQ35 combo should prove adequate. The 4-banger is supposedly good for 38 mpg on the highway. We’ll have live shots shortly. Thanks to VWVortex for blowing the embargo!

We knew that Buick’s new Enclave was due be revealed simply by looking at our Facebook feeds and seeing reports of an elaborate, alcohol-and-buffet laden event somewhere far beyond the means of most journos. As we sit here eating our McDonald’s Value Menu entrees while sipping a bottle of Thunderbird, we, your humble servants, bring you information on Buick’s newest crossover.

LED lights both inside and out, as well as a new IntelliLink infotainment system are the big changes, along with a revised 6-speed automatic. A front-wheel drive Enclave will supposedly hit 24 mpg on the highway. Somehow, Buick felt it necessary to fly a bunch of hacks out to some far-flung luxury resort and host an event just for this. Excuse me while I screw the cap of my noble, strawberry flavored vintage.

The MKZ’s oddly thick C-pillar, kangaroo hips and pseudo-Aston rear deck treament look like a mismatched, mis-shapen pastiche that tires too hard to be an Audi A7. The front, as previously discussed, isn’t the most elegant either. We’ll leave it to Jack and the rest of the TTAC crew to see how it looks in person. The MKZ concept wasn’t so impressive in person, but it didn’t look all that bad in the flesh.

Among journalists, the New York Auto Show is consistently a favorite on “the circuit”. Is it the interesting product size of the Javits Center? Of course not. It’s the chance to have an OEM fly you out to New York, put you up at a luxury hotel, wine you, and dine you. Unless you’re TTAC, in which case your base of operations is the Super 8 Motel in Bergen County, New Jersey.

Nevertheless, the debuts at this year’s NYIAS are interesting, and beyond that, they are not ridiculous, six-figure hypercars or “mobility concepts”. New York is where most of the mainstream product, the cars that really matter, make their debut.

Acura: The RLX concept, set to replace the RL, will debut. Honda Canada actually presented a series of renderings to a group of assembled journalists back in January, and they looked like you’d expect. A bigger, blander blend of the TL and and the Hyundai Genesis. Interior room is said to rival the BMW 7-Series despite an exterior footprint that’s closer to the 5-Series. A V6 engine is said to deliver V8 power, and although the SH-AWD electric all-wheel drive/hybrid system will be featured, it will apparently not be standard. Like all Honda/Acura “concepts” this should be 99% of the final design.

BMW: The M6 convertible will bow, alongside a facelifted BMW X1, which will finally debut for the U.S. market in 2013. The M6 features identical mechanics to the M6 coupe and M5, while the X1 will serve as BMW’s rival to the Range Rover Evoque, right down to the 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

Buick: Buick’s big crossover, the Enclave gets a refresh, along with its siblings the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia.

Chevrolet: Along with the Traverse facelift, the 2014 Impala debuts. The long-running fullsize has stagnated so long that it’s getting bed sores, and a new look both inside and out along with the well-received LFX V6 and 6-speed automatic should help inject some excitement into the Impala. GM debuted the 2013 Malibu at NYIAS last year, and that car’s 4-cylinder only lineup should help give the Impala some breathing room.

Fisker Nina: Everything is going wrong for Fisker right now, but the company will unveil their next car, known as “Project Nina”, said to be a smaller version of the Karma.

GMC: A Denali version of the Terrain SUV will debut, along with a 3.6L 301 horsepower V6 with virtually no trade-off in fuel economy.

Honda: A “concept” of the next-generation Crosstour will be revealed. We can’t possibly imagine what direction Honda will go in from the current, ill-received car.

Hyundai: The new Santa Fe will replace the long-in-the-tooth current generation Santa Fe. A dramatic new exterior, interior and a modern powertrain lineup should bring Hyundai’s mid-size crossover back up to its fighting weight.

Infiniti: An EV concept from Infiniti will debut. It will supposedly be larger and more luxurious than the Leaf, but Infiniti has been very tight-lipped about details.

Lexus: With a new Camry comes a new Lexus ES. A hybrid version is said to debut for the first time, and styling will likely ape the larger GS, right down to the new corporate face.

Mercedes-Benz: A big show for the three-pointed star brand, as three new products debut. Facelifted versions of the GL (with new AMG G63 and G65 models, including a twin-turbo V8) and GLK (as well as a diesel option for the small SUV) will debut alongside the SL65 AMG.

Mitsubishi: The Outlander Sport gets a facelift and a new CVT gearbox.

Nissan: A next-generation Altima bows at New York, with styling closer to the Maxima and all-new powertrains. Unlike previous Altimas, this car will be sold globally.

SRT: The 2013 SRT Viper will debut after a long, drawn-out series of teasers.

Subaru: A new Legacy and Outback with a facelift and updated powertrains will share the stage with the new XV crossover, which is a raised-up Impreza similar to the previous Outback Sport.

Toyota: Along with a facelifted Venza, an all-new, radically styled Avalon will debut.
