The Truth About Cars » los angeles auto show Meet The New MINI, Same As The Old MINI Mon, 18 Nov 2013 15:17:17 +0000 2014-MINI-cooper-hardtop

Photos of the re-designed MINI Cooper have been leaked ahead of its debut at this week’s Los Angeles Auto Show. As you can expect, it looks a lot like the old car.

The big news here is an all-new engine for the base car, a 1.5L turbocharged three-cylinder engine making 134 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. The Cooper S retains a 4-cylinder, this time a 2.0L with 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque.

Both 6-speed manual and automatics are on offer, while the car is 4.5 inches longer, 1.7 inches wider and 0.3 inches taller. Absent on the new MINI is the goofy giant speedometer, now placed with a giant LCD screen.

Chevy Gives Us An Idea Of The Size Of The New Colorado Ahead Of LA Reveal Wed, 13 Nov 2013 10:30:22 +0000 2015-chevy-colorado-teaser-1-optHaving already launched the all new fullsize 2014 Silverado & GMC Sierra pickups and 2015 Heavy Duty versions of those trucks this year, General Motors is turning its attention to midsize trucks as it gets ready to reveal the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon later this month at the Los Angeles Auto Show. GM has already teased photos of parts of those trucks’ front ends and now they’ve released another image, this time of a draped Colorado sitting next to the new Silverado.

While the new truck is covered up, the photo does give us an idea of its scale, which appears to be significantly larger than the previous Colorado. Production will begin next year at GM’s Wentzville, Missouri assembly plant. Chevy says that it “is engineered to be the most capable, most versatile and technologically advanced midsized truck in the market.”. You can watch the reveal live from the LA show on November 20 here.

2015 Subaru WRX Teased Ahead of Los Angeles Show Tue, 12 Nov 2013 11:30:45 +0000 2015-WRX_628opt

Subaru will reveal the production 2015 WRX at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month, after showing the concept at the New York Auto Show in the spring. In preparation for the LA show, Subaru has released this teaser image, showing the ‘Rex in ruby red.

Compared to the concept, which was shown in a more traditional WRX blue, the production car appears to be a bit toned down, but with that aggressive functional hood scoop, nobody will mistake it for a base Impreza.

No specifications or feature details have been released so far, but you can expect the same recipe that the WRX has had for a while, including a turbocharged boxer engine, all wheel drive and probably a manual transmission. It’s rumored that the performance versions of the Impreza, the 2015 WRX and the even higher performance STi, will only be offered as sedans.

Kia K900 To Debut at LA Auto Show Tue, 29 Oct 2013 15:16:28 +0000 20120527_kia_k9_1Over a month ago, we brought you news on the upcoming arrival of Kia’s rear-driven K900 sometime in early 2014. If you can’t wait to see the car in the flesh, however, the car will make its debut in November during the Los Angeles Auto Show.

The brief press release issued by Kia claims the K900 (otherwise known as the K9 in its home market, and the Quoris in export markets not known as the United States) will allow the automaker to “take value to new levels of sophistication,” positioning the car as their flagship among the Fortes and hamster-piloted, Lady Gaga-blasting Souls normally found on the lots.

Though the release didn’t specify beyond stating that the K900 will have either a V6 or V8 driving the power to the back, the flagship sedan will possess a 3.8-liter V6 pushing 240 horses out of the stable with a larger V8 bringing 420 wild stallions to the party, both attached to an eight-speed automatic.

The K900 is set to take dead aim at the BMW 7 Series, just in time for your next high school reunion under the serious moonlight. Price of admission is expected to be between $50,000 and $70,000, with a big campaign to debut during Super Bowl XLVIII in February 2014.

Mazda CX-5 Gets Power Boost: 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show Thu, 29 Nov 2012 17:28:45 +0000

Mazda is remedying the biggest complain regarding its wonderful CX-5 crossover; the lack of power. Starting next year, the 2014 CX-5 can be ordered with the new 2.5L Skyactiv engine offered in the new Mazda6.

While the base 2.0L is still available in Sport trim levels, the 2.5L will be available on Touring and Grand Touring trims, making 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is rated at 25/32 mpg for FWD models and 24/30 for AWD models. The 2.5L will not be available with a stick shift, but Mazda’s automatic in the Skyactiv is about as good as it gets anyways.

Kia Forte Shows Off Its Schnoz: 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show Thu, 29 Nov 2012 14:00:49 +0000

Yesterday we showed off the profile of the 2014 Kia Forte. Now here’s the mug.

Unlike its twin the Hyundai Elantra, the Forte  will come with either a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine with 148 hp and 131 lb-ft of torque or a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder with 173 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque. The base engine gets a choice of 6-speed transmissions, while the 2.0 is strictly a slushbox. Also borrowed from the Elantra is the selectable steering system.

Death To Spoilers Thu, 29 Nov 2012 14:00:07 +0000

There is no better way to ruin a car than by putting a spoiler on it. Don’t believe me? Picture any mainstream road car with and without a wing. Which one looks better? I think the answer looks obvious.

The Jaguar XFR-S is the latest, and perhaps most egregious offender. I think every car in the Jaguar lineup right now is beautiful. The XF’s design, despite being almost five years old (an eternity in the luxury car world) looks as fresh as it did upon its debut. But Jaguar somehow decided to go put the most pathetic looking spoiler in the history of JC Whitney catalogs.

The wing on the XKR-S looks even worse – the normal XKR is even more attractive than the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, but the XKR-S, with its blue paint, black wheels and silly spoiler, is 17 year old Derek’s idea of what a Hustler Centerfold would be attracted to; a luxury car that looks like a tuner car and sounds like a Mustang. Nowadays, I’d be mortally embarassed if I had to take a lady to dinner in a Gatorade blue car with a spoiler, no matter how fast or expensive it is (well, that arguably makes things worse in a way).

My hatred of spoilers isn’t confined to fast Jags. Got a Mitsubishi Evo? Chuck the wing. A Mustang 5.0? Delete it too. The last-generation Toyota Supra? Sans basket handle, please. There are three cars that look good with a spoiler. The Ferrari F40 and Acura NSX were designed to have them from the start. The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is so bloody obnoxious that the spoiler is a necessity. Note that hatchbacks are exempt from my fatwa. A hatch spoiler on a GTI makes it look more butch than a standard golf.

Dissenting opinions are welcome as always. But if I somehow find myself with a Pontiac G8 GXP, I hope there’s a V6 owner willing to swap trunklids.

Hyundai Veloster C3 Rolltop – The Korean Cabrio: 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show Thu, 29 Nov 2012 13:00:14 +0000

Part Fiat 500C and part GMC Envoy XUV, the Volster C3 rolltop concept has a rolling canvas roof (like the Fiat) designed to help make it easy to carry tall objects (like the XUV). The roof can roll two ways, away from the cargo area to carry tall objects, or away from the passengers to help get some sunshine on their heads. Underneath, it’s all Veloster Turbo mechanicals.

2014 Acura RLX Pictures Revealed: 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show Wed, 28 Nov 2012 18:55:17 +0000

Whether you love or hate Acura, there’s no denying that they stick to their guns.

The RLX, as previously discussed, will come standard with front-wheel drive and a V6 engine, in keeping with Honda’s legendary stubborness tradition. The base RLX will put out 310 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque, while returning 20 mpg in town and 31 mpg on the highway. A four-wheel steering system, not seen on a Honda product since the now departed Prelude, will apparently help with the car’s driving dynamics.

The big news with the RLX is an all-wheel drive system with a 3.7L V6 and two electric motors in the rear wheels, good for 370 horsepower. The hybrid version is said to be good for 30 mpg city and 30 mpg on the highway as well. The transverse layout will also pay divendeds with respect to interior packaging. Despite being the same size as a BMW 5-Series, the RLX apparently offers as much as 3 inches more rear seat legroom than its RWD competitors. Length remains unchanged, but the car rides on a two-inch longer wheelbase.

A whole host of electronic nannies are standard, as well as an interior loaded with all the necessary gadgets. The RLX may be a technical tour de force, but it’s tough to imagine that such an image-conscious segment would be drawn to such a nondescript looking car.

Live Shots Of The Ford Fiesta ST: 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show Wed, 28 Nov 2012 18:09:29 +0000

The Ford Fiesta ST looks even better in a bland color like silver. It’s the kind of car you could leave parked on the street without worrying about theft or vandalism. Try that with a hot Honda from the 90′s. The ST’s big change might be the ST-specific seats installed here. There’s only a small badge, and the alloys don’t exactly scream “performance car” either.

Jaguar XFR-S Is Obnoxiously Blue: 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show Wed, 28 Nov 2012 17:52:23 +0000

The Jaguar XKR-S must be self-destructive. The elegant lines of the XF and the awesome 550-horsepower supercharged V8 are marred by the retina-searing blue paint and the tuner-esque spoiler on the rear. Can that be deleted? If so, I’ll take one in black.

Toyota RAV4 Re-Design Marks The End Of The 4-Speed Automatic Wed, 28 Nov 2012 15:57:32 +0000

Aside from the antiquated gearbox, Toyota’s next-gen RAV4 is also ditching its third row seat and V6 engine option. The 2.5L four-cylinder option making 176 horsepower. Oh, and the liftgate now opens upwards, rather than sideways. Excuse me, my heart feels like it’s beating too fast…

500C+(2)500L = $$$: 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show Wed, 28 Nov 2012 15:31:33 +0000

Fiat dropped a product onslaught at the LA show, revealing two variants of the 500L, and an Abarth version of the 500C, so I can better sunburn my enormous bald spot.

But since you already know what the 500C looks like, let’s focus on the Fiat 500L. All three cars share the Abarth’s 160 horsepower 1.4L turbo engine. The 500L will be available in standard trim or as a pseudo-crossover known as the “Trekking” (shown above). Despite sounding horribly lame, the Trekking isn’t that distinguishable from the standard 500, and the visual changes are minimal. The 500L will launch in mid-2013, with pricing announced closer to launch.

Now, make plans to bring over the Panda!

Porsche Reveals Hat-Wearing Boxster: 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show Wed, 28 Nov 2012 15:20:25 +0000

We liked the Boxster S when we briefly drove it during a stage-managed event designed to show off its best characteristics. The Cayman should be even better.

The base Cayman uses the venerable 2.7L flat-six, good for 275 horsepower, while the Cayman S gets a 325 horsepower 3.4L unit. With the PDK, Sport Chrono package and god knows whatever else, the Cayman S is capable of a 4.4 second 0-60 time. Considering that the new 911 has evolved into some sort of Grand Touring car with an engine in the back, this might be your best bet at a sporting P-Car.

Kia Forte Previewed Prior To LA Tue, 27 Nov 2012 17:54:50 +0000

The Kia Cerato is already on sale in world markets, but we’ll be getting our first taste of it, in the form of the Forte.

Expect a three-car lineup, similar to the Elantra, with a hatchback and even a coupe model. No word on whether the hatch is based off the Cerato, or the European Cee’d.

Acura RLX Spy Shots Surface Sans Camo Tue, 27 Nov 2012 15:37:47 +0000

Honda/Acura fansite Temple of VTEC has a series of spy photos of the Acura RLX taken in China, revealing the car’s interior details, and one lone exterior shot.

As you can see, the car is non-descript in that special Acura sort of way The faux-BMW Hoffmeister kink is there at the rear window, while the front is indistinguishable from the rest of the lineup. The interior looks well finished, but again, there’s little to distinguish it from the rest of the pack. Tomorrow, we’ll get a proper look at the RLX when it’s unveiled at the L.A. Auto Show.

Five Door Ford Fiesta ST Just Shy Of 200 Horsepower Mon, 26 Nov 2012 19:46:42 +0000

197 horsepower. 214 lb-ft of torque. Five doors and a useable back seat? Perhaps I spoke too soon about the Fiat Abarth.

This is said to be the first look at the North American spec Ford Fiesta ST. It’s expected to return 34 mpg on the highway thanks to a tuned-up 1.6L Ecoboost and a 6-speed manual gearbox. Aside from the cosmetic changes, a bespoke stability control system, torque-vectoring and quicker steering should help make the Fiesta a potent little hot hatch. We’ll get all the details Wednesday.

2012 Los Angeles Auto Show Preview Mon, 26 Nov 2012 18:54:09 +0000 Click here to view the embedded video.

The 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show is upon us, and as usual, TTAC will have photographers in the field, complete with live shots of all the new debuts, while we provide anger-tinged appraisals of all the new debuts. Press days don’t start for another couple of days, but we’ve got a rundown of what to expect after the jump.

Acura: The beak brand will debut their new flagship luxury sedan, the RLX. Having already seen a rendering of the production car, I’d advise you all to brace yourself for an avalanche of conservative styling. The base front-wheel drive car will get a sophisticated four-wheel steering system, while the top-spec model will get the much touted Sport Hybrid AWD system.

Audi: The big news here is the proliferation of diesels. Four of them. The Q5, A6, A7 and A8 will get Audi’s new twin-turbo V6 diesel, joining the Q7 as part of Audi’s TDI lineup. What about the A4?

BMW: A coupe version of the i3 concept will be displayed.

Chevrolet: An EV version of the Spark will be unveiled – performance should be brisk, with a 0-60 time of under 8 seconds, but the car will only be sold in California for now, ostensibly due to compliance issues.

Chrysler/Fiat: The big story at Chrysler is actually Fiat; the 500 EV and a convertible version of the 500 Abarth will bow. The 500L, a four-door pseudo-crossover based on the 500, will add some depth to Fiat’s lineup in the USA.

Ford: The already unveiled Transit Connect Wagon will be shown in public, and a Fiesta ST is all but confirmed. The baby ST should get its motivation from the 1.6L Ecoboost used in the Fusion and Escape.

Honda: The sort-of newly restyled 2013 Civic will be presented by Honda to atone for their deadly sin, the 2012 Civic. We’ve seen the exterior revamp already, but the interior is still the big question mark.

Hyundai: An unnamed concept is set to be shown.

Jaguar: The XFR-S will borrow the 550 horsepower supercharged V8 from the XKR-S and transplant it into the dated but still charming XF.

Kia: An all-new Forte, including a coupe and hatchback will debut.

Mercedes-Benz: A concept vehicle depicting the G-Class in the year 2025 will be shown alongside the SLS Black Series.

MINI: The Clubvan commercial vehicle will be revealed, as well as the Paceman two-door crossover.

Porsche: The slow-selling Cayman will be replaced by…an all-new Cayman that looks a lot like the Boxster, and even uses the same powertrains. Who would have guessed?

Subaru: The 2014 Forester is the big news here. The next-generation 2.0L turbocharged Boxer will be available, but only mated to a CVT gearbox.

Toyota: The RAV4 and it’s famous 4-speed automatic will die a quiet death, replaced by an all-new version. We’ll get our first look on Wednesday.

Volkswagen: The ragtop version of the new Beetle will be unveiled.

Chrysler Gets Its Own Man Van Mon, 26 Nov 2012 16:18:56 +0000

Just as Dodge has their own “man van”, the Grand Caravan R/T, Chrysler will now get their own variant, the Town and Country S. There are no mechanical changes to be had save for a re-tuned suspension system. Cosmetically, the blacked out trim and fancy wheels are the most prominent visually indicators. Inside, a Blu-Ray entertainment system will keep the younger ones occupied.

Fiat 500L To Launch In Soft-Roader Guise Fri, 23 Nov 2012 17:55:41 +0000

It’s an open secret that the Fiat 500L will debut in North American trim at next week’s Los Angeles Auto Show, but the 500L will bow in somewhat different form than what we may have been expecting.

The 500L Trekking will debut next week, with a raised ride height, a new fascia and body cladding to give it a more rugged look. Autocar reports that AWD will be absent, but a new traction control system will be added for better stability on loose surfaces. The 500T’s 135-horsepower engine is expected to provide motivation, along with a dual-clutch gearbox.

Fiat 500e Breaks Cover Fri, 16 Nov 2012 15:41:14 +0000

All you J.Lo fans hankering for the chance to get behind the wheel of an emissions-free Fiat 500, the wait is (almost) over.

Visually, the Fiat 500e (for electric, natch) has only a few subtle changes, presumably to make it more aerodynamic. The 500e has been said to be a “compliance car” to appease California regulators who demand a certain number of EVs per year. The 500e is also expected to be a serious money-loser for Chrysler, to the tune of $10,000 per car.

2013 Honda Civic Revealed Mon, 12 Nov 2012 15:37:27 +0000

Everybody’s favorite schadenfreude victim got a minor refresh intended to stave off the critics and ensure its continued dominance in the best-seller ranks. Did it work?

The changes to the 2013 Honda Civic aren’t exactly earth-shattering, and to be honest, we’re hoping that the interior gets the brunt of the cosmetic work, since it needed it the most. Powertrain and other mechanical details weren’t revealed either. We’ll have to wait for the L.A. Auto Show in a couple weeks time to get those sorted out. The 2012 Civic, even with its supposedly crappy interior, boring styling and forgettable driving dynamics, is still the 4th best selling car in America. The critics may not have liked it, but my Grandma sure did. And it’s her, not them, who are handing over the money.
