Usually, at this time of the year, Germany would already be closed down, to reopen some time after the first week of January.  Not so this time around. The calendar punishes Deutschland by putting the 25th and 26th of December and 1st of January – all legal holidays – on weekends. Ouch. And if you are working at a German car manufacturer, you might be asked to come in “between the holidays” to make some badly needed cars.

Associated Press reports that “Germany’s leading carmakers are making the rare move of cutting holidays short as 2010 draws to a close to meet a surge in demand that is contributing to the nation’s strong economic rebound from the recession.”

The German car market dropped more than 25 percent in first eleven months of the year, but the VDA automakers’ association expects car production for the year to come in at 5.5 million vehicles, 11 percent more than last year. Why? Exports. Especially to China.

  • The BMW factory in Leipzig will remain open between Christmas and New Year.
  • Daimler is reducing its year-end closure times: “On average, the closures are about one week shorter this year in all of our factories than they were in the past two years of the crisis,” said Daimler spokeswoman Dominique Albrecht.
  • Volkswagen will keep factories open through Dec. 23, last year most closed for the year on Dec. 19.

In the first unique Chrysler brand spot since bankruptcy, America is referred to as ChryCo’s “traveling companion.” Which is a bit rich, considering the American people were generous enough to spend billions pulling the wreck that was Chrysler out of a ditch less than a year ago. Who knows, maybe the term “unwilling investors” didn’t play so well in the workshops, a possibility that might also explain why only a single modern Chrysler vehicle (the 300) is allowed to punctuate the ad’s gauzy nostalgia. In any case, notch up another Chrysler Group ad that says nothing about anything that might give one hope for the firm’s future. Ironically enough…

According to a Chrysler release, the spot

was created in response to requests from Chrysler Group dealers and research conducted which found that consumers do not realize that Chrysler Group has emerged from bankruptcy and is now a different company with a new alliance partner and a healthy product plan.

Perhaps Chrysler will release more ads in the campaign that deal a little more explicitly with the company’s situation, as this spot doesn’t mention bankruptcy or Fiat (or more than one Chrysler model currently on sale). Instead, Chrysler decided to make an ad for leather luggage. Or, as they put it

The ad features a driver bringing home a leather travel bag throughout the years in various Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep® vehicles. The travel bag symbolizes the continuation of life with all Chrysler Group brands and is the string that ties the entire story together.

So it’s a symbol, a metaphor if you will. Kind of like the ENVI program, or descriptions of the Chrysler bailout as an “investment.” The message, however, is clear: do not, under any circumstances think of Chrysler in concrete, reality-based terms. Which is actually a fairly brilliant approach to selling America’s least lovable car company.

TTAC is something of a family affair these days. Though our contributors are still scattered around the country and the world, TTAC’s Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor are now a father-son team that, despite living a few hours drive from one another, hardly ever see each other in person. So with the holidays upon us, we’re slowing down our relentless coverage in order to spend some time together as a family. From now through Sunday, we’ll continue to post some content, though at a more leisurely, holiday-like pace. But don’t worry: though on-page content will slow, we will be taking the time to put finishing touches on several new series to debut here on TTAC as we head into the new year. We’ve got some great stuff lined up for 2010, and we’re thrilled at the prospect of another year of automotive truth-telling.
