Next up on the CVT’s hit list is this Honda Civic. Honda’s Tetsuo Iwamura confirmed that the Civic will get an all-new Earth Dreams powertrain, featuring direct injection and a CVT transmission, within the next couple years.

The re-designed Fit, coming this fall, will get the new technology first, as Honda looks to capture buyers who are interested in fuel economy despite gas prices leveling off in recent months. Iwamura toldĀ Automotive News

“Gasoline prices are stabilizing in the mid-$3-a-gallon range, and Detroit is selling quite a few pickups,” Iwamura said. “Yet while the average person sees those numbers, their income hasn’t risen that much. It’s wrong to say Americans don’t care about fuel economy. They care.”

Signs point to a 2015 introduction for the powertrains, as the most recent refresh in 2013 will necessitate another round of tweaks to keep the car competitive.

While the Earth Dreams gasoline engines will underpin everything in Honda’s lineup going forward, Europe will get at least one diesel version – and we’ll probably miss out.

Said to be the lightest diesel engine in its class, the 1.6L mill makes 118 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharger’s turbine is apparently controlled via an electronic unit to cut down on lag and optimize engine response – though it’s still powered by exhaust gases, and has nothing to do with the long rumored electric turbochargers that never seem to materialize. The new diesel will debut in early 2013 in the European and World Market Civic.

Starting with the redesigned 2013 Accord, Honda will introduce its new, ultra-efficient/more powerful Earth Dreams engine lineup. And it’s far from the most silly moniker attached to automotive technology.

Acura, of course, had their Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive. If you’ve ever watched a Japanese market product video on Youtube (or, if you’re the at Kreindlers, pulled a dusty VHS tape off the basement bookshelf), you know that it would sound great being barked out by an overly enthusiastic Japanese-speaking narrarator, but sounds slightly absurd when processed by a North American ear.

By far the silliest is “Skyactiv”, from Mazda. The technology behind it is great; ultra efficient engines, light weight and automatic gearboxes that are actually enjoyable. But is it spelled “SKYACTIV”, “Skyactiv” or “SKYActiv”. Why the name? What does it mean? At least, on the American front, “Ecoboost” is pretty descriptive, even if its more “Boost” than “Eco”.
