Chevelle

If you haven’t noticed — and judging by the lack of comments, I’m guessing you haven’t — things have been picking up a bit over at the long-dormant TTAC Forum. I’ve been posting a near-daily “Find of the Day” in the Classic and Collector Car forum. I’m trying to highlight the interesting, cool, and weird stuff I find as I tread the crapwagon-infested waters of eBay, craigslist, classified sites, and other forums.

There is plenty to look at. Just this week: A rusty Bronco; an oddly-shortened Chevelle; a ’90s-vintage Alfa Romeo Spider; a Porsche 944S; and a Buick Reatta ragtop.

Bronco

Today, I happened across this sad-looking Ford Bronco on eBay. Nearly thirty years in a barn will not be kind to any car. At $5,500, though, there might be enough to salvage from this heap.

Early yesterday, I spotted this Chevelle, also on eBay. From my admittedly-limited knowledge of drag racing, I’d think a longer wheelbase would be advantageous. A short wheelbase would be better for autocross. So, explain to me, why?

944

On Wednesday, Craigslist beckoned with this 944S. The 16 valve, naturally aspirated engine gives performance close to the Turbo, without the maintenance headaches the forced-induction motor seems to require. I want this car.

Alfa

I’d forgotten that Alfa imported the old Spider to the US through 1993. This one came over as the Miata was hitting the shores. The Alfa has more timeless looks, but the Miata will be easier to keep running. Which reminds me. My ’91 Miata needs to be driven again…

Reatta

Quite likely the nicest Buick Reatta left in the world, even if the car sits on its original 25-year-old tires. It’s not like the Reatta driving experience induces canyon carving, but this is a serious hazard in an otherwise nice example of a car few even remember existing.

So, come join us in the forums, and tell me what you think of these cars and more!

Over at Jalopnik, Patrick George discusses the recent trademark filing by General Motors for the Chevelle name. After a brief discussion regarding trademark procedure, George makes a logical conclusion; the Chevelle name may end up attached to something less than worthy, similar to how Dodge’s C-segment car ended up with the Dart moniker. But there is a potential ray of sunshine here for enthusiasts.

In January, TTAC commenter nadude (or as he’s known to everyone else, Mark Reuss, GM’s North American head) told an Australian news outlet that the Code 130R concept car “would be a great entry for us.” The Code 130R was a BMW 1-Series-esque concept car that used an FR layout and an efficient four-cylinder engine, not unlike the Scion FR-S.

As for how the car might make it into production

“I don’t know if they (Toyota) are making any money but it is a very attractive car…we would do something with the knowledge of Alpha and the background, but we wouldn’t take Alpha and try and shrink it.”

Currently, Alpha only has two vehicles based off of it; the Cadillac ATS and the next generation Chevrolet Camaro. GM will need to utilize this architecture further, as a way of amortizing its costs. Toyota is following a similar approach with the FR-S, spawning multiple variants to help absorb the costs of developing such a platform from the ground up.

While Reuss’ comments seem to suggest something different, it’s hard to make an armchair guess on how GM would get the Code 130R into production. At least GM has some kind of basis to start with, not to mention the will of some of its top level execs. As TTAC’s resident “voice of a generation”, I’ve already given the stamp of approval to the Code 130R. Unlike the SS, I could actually afford this, and the FR-S, as many of you know, doesn’t quite do it for me. So how about a compact, 4-cylinder Chevelle with rear-drive based off of some kind of Alpha platform? Sounds good to me.

Well, maybe this Chevy (which I found in a Denver self-serve yard last week) had a few cosmetic flaws, including an unfortunate bowling-ball-dropped-from-5th-floor dent in the roof.
I like to use chicken-wire as an armature when I use this much Bondo on a car, but that’s just me.
I’m slightly tempted to buy this trunklid for garage display, but not before I hang the Goddess of the Rockies milk-truck door in there first.

The Denver MCA boasts something that most museums don’t have: a 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle parked on its nose outside the building. I’ve been trying to shoot a worthwhile photograph of this fine sculpture by Gonzalo Lebrija, entitled Entre La Vida y La Muerte, but I just don’t have the boss camera skilz to do it justice. Fortunately, I know a guy who does.

The Chevelle still has the engine, transmission, interior, the works, and appears to be in pretty good condition. Was it worth removing a solid classic Detroit car from street duty in the name of art? I say it was worth it; 425,300 Chevelles were built for the 1968 model year, so it’s not exactly rare, and Lebrija’s sculpture has thousands of non-car-freaks contemplating one of Detroit’s best designs.
