Being the bearer of bad news isn’t always fun, but sometimes its necessary. Despite sending Audi fanboys into a frenzy with photographs of a real, live RS4 Avant, the likelihood of this car being imported is next to zero. Hit the jump for more pontificating from your favorite enfant terrible know-it-all wagon hater.

Rather than trot out arcane explanations of certification costs, CAFE, market positioning and the like, here’s the strongest argument for why Audi has no intention of bringing this car over. Car companies regularly bring in single examples of vehicles they sell elsewhere. They do it to let executives get a taste of product sold elsewhere, if not for the sheer novelty of having something weird. Honda Canada used to have a yellow Beat kicking around their offices – it was never going to be sold here, but boy was it popular when it came time to sign out cars for the weekend.

Don’t believe Volkswagen does that? He’s a VW employee explaining the process, while simultaneously quashing any hope of the car coming here despite numerous posters insisting that Audi officials “hinted” that the RS4 was “greenlit” for American consumption.

“I did a double take when I saw the RS4 in our garage. Honestly, I wouldn’t look too far into it. There’s been all kinds of stuff here like the Polo, Scirocco, A1, etc. that didn’t have a chance of being sold in the U.S. I know it’s blasphemy, but a QS5 would likely sell in much higher numbers than a RS4 Avant. Wouldn’t be that much slower either.”

Ok, I know what you’re thinking; Mercedes-Benz sells the E63 wagon and Cadillac sells the CTS-V. And look at all those people on Vortex insisting that they too will buy one if only Audi would bring it here.

Cadillac only needed to sell 5 CTS-V wagons to break even on the whole endeavor, so the project was naturally greenlit. As far as the E63 goes, we can consider it a marketing exercise and nothing more. Mercedes keeps a brown E63 wagon in the press fleet for the exact same reason that Audi’s RS4 mule has a giant sticker on the rear window proclaiming “You just got beat by a wagon”. It’s a great way to curry favor with car geeks and generate “buzz” for free. Many S4 Avants were bought by men looking to placate their demands of their spouses for a luxurious but practical family car. At the time, Audi’s crossover range wasn’t really available yet and the Avants were the sole option. An S4 could be passed off as the “most expensive” version (a must-have for status hungry affluent types) with the husbands not cracking on about the car’s performance chops.

Now that the Real Housewives of Suburbistan have moved on to the Q7 (god forbid they should have to drive a Q5) Avant sales have dried up to the point where the half the lineup has been axed in favor of the Allroad. Then again, you never know who buys these things…

Chris Harris may have been wrong about Miatas, but his review of the Audi RS4, where he describes the various configurable driveline settings as “adjustment theatre”, brilliantly describes the overly-complex systems that are cropping up in today’s performance cars as they attempt to appeal to not just the lead-footed, but the well-heeled.

The RS4, as Harris notes, is supposed to be the sports car for everyone, able to carry dogs, people and cargo while offering unbeatable performance in every situation. It would be easy to dismiss the whole package as a hopeless compromise, and tell everyone to go buy a Caterham and a base A4 wagon, but luckily, Harris has the empathy to see past that fallacious, nonsensical line of thinking.

Adjustment theater isn’t just defined to the OEMs. Think of the adjustable shocks that offer different “clicks” that presumably adjust how soft or stiff they are. But what about pre-loading, or rebound damping or any of the other parameters that really matter. Turning a knob from “1″ to “10″ doesn’t tell you much, but it sure does sound cool when bragging to friends or forum users.

Adjustment theater isn’t just the domain of the RS4. The E60 M5 was famous for having all kinds of different modes (including a “Power” button), the Nissan GTR is like Gran Turismo come to life and even the Hyundai Elantra GT, which we’ll be driving next week, has different power steering modes.

Harris notes that one of the great things about the previous RS4 was that it “…just worked out of the box”. Today’s breed of performance car seems to be able to do that – as long as you know the right cheat codes.

A  4.2L V8 making 450 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. A 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. 0-60 in 4.7 seconds. Want to know more about the 2013 Audi RS4 Avant? Hit the jump to get down to the nitty-gritty.

Sitting 20mm lower, the RS4 Avant borrows the RS5′s powertrain but packages it in the wagon bodystyle we all love so much (but are constantly denied by certain European OEMs. Top speed is officially 155 mph, but Audi will remove the limiter to allow the Avant to reach 173 mph. 14.3″ brakes are standard up front, while carbon ceramic brakes are optional. Audi’s Drive Select, along with adjustable dampers and speed-variable electric power steering are standard. The torque vectoring sport differential is an option.

Audi says that the RS4 Avant will do 21 mpg combined – in line with a Ford Mustang 5.0 and 5 mpg better than a BMW M3. The RS4 Avant will set you back €76,600, or $99,461, but European car prices, like vehicle tastes, are notorious for not carrying over to our market.

Despite being falsely accused by members of the B&B of hating wagons, I will formally declare that I adore them – I’m just a realist about their sales prospects in the United States. The 2013 Audi RS4 Avant forces me to confront the dissonance over lusting after such a car, while knowing that it would be a non-starter in North America for all but the most eccentric rich dudes, ala the Mercedes E63 Wagon.

The crew at AutoGuide obtained these spy shots, and apparently this car will share the RS5′s 4.2L V8 and 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. Personally, I’m pulling for this, as a naturally aspirated V8 is a welcome change from the boosted engines being offered in so many of Audi’s (and other manufacturers) vehicles these days. The RS4 will get an official reveal at March’s Geneva Auto Show. Look for a brown version to show up in a press fleet near you sometime soon.
