A Ferrari 456 Venice station wagon could do all the things I would ask of a car quite nicely.

If I was paying for the vehicle myself however, something dramatically cheaper would have to do...a Mazda Speed 3 wagon perhaps...

I just bought it. A Honda S2000.

Now, if I had money... Maserati GranTurismo! Love that engine sound. Such a sexy car too!

Shame car for 10 years? Boring. My home built Lotus Seven might fit the bill but certainly not as an only car. I suppose if I had a fully restored Tatra T87 I could keep it that long. Otherwise I'd get bored and move on.

I'd keep my Aztek. I need something somewhat large, but not so large it's cumbersome, for city delivery.

Though I like my "capped" Ranger, it's only a standard cab; and the upgrading to a newer extended cab Ranger is out because the "super" cab's jump seats are a joke.

My Aztek handles my delivery route and I can get the occasional grandkid into the back without a shoehorn.

I totally agree with you, MacDaddy, but where did that rant come from? I might have glossed over some of the longer posts in this thread but I don't remember cell phones being mentioned heretofore.

As a person who was recently rear-ended by a cell-phone distracted driver (I was stopped while waiting to make a legal left on turn, on a four-lane surface road with no designated left turn lane, bright sunny day, dry, flat, straight road, left turn signal on, no visual obstructions) I think I can speak with a tad more cred than all you libertarians put together. Anyone driving a 2-ton average vehicle, at 60+ mph has no business talking on the phone (or reading, shaving, applying makeup in the mirror, feeding their kids, or any of the dozen other distracting, stupid things I have seen people do while driving.) What you should be doing is DRIVING in a manner so as not to jeopardize the health and safety of other drivers and pedestrians on the roads. The way some of you people talk, you think it is your God-given right to do whatever you damned well please, and everyone else's responsibility to stay outta your way. Mankind got along without cell phones for the first several millenia of our wretched existence. The next time you jump behind the wheel and start dialing up your phone, ask yourself....is the call worth my life, or someone else's life? Because the way I have seen (and personally felt the impact of) how MANY people drive while distracted by their phones, it just may be.

I'm down with the author on Audi's...'cept mine is an A6 Quatro Avant...comfortable, mildly tossable, hauls the weekly groceries and yearly garden stuff quite nicely, the 2.8 V-6 motivates quite adequately down the road, all-wheel drive to deal with Michigan winters. Sensible, reasonably efficient, comfortable, attractive, durable. Meets most of my needs.... I've driven it 3 years after buying it used. It just cracked 100k, so 8-10 more years with this car will allow me to avoid a car note long enough to invest in more important things....like my son's college and my retirement. Boo Yah!

We're already in our 10 year car, a 2006 Chevy Malibu Maxx. We needed something that can/could haul our very active teenagers and all of their crap, but didn't want to get into an SUV with all of their tradeoffs. This will be the car that drops off the older child at college this fall, and the younger one will learn to drive in.

I got the supplier discount and at the time there was extra money on the hood to get Maxx's off the lot, so I got it a lot cheaper than almost anything you could think of. Epsilon (think Opel Signum) chassis, with independent suspension and 4 wheel disc brakes and a torquey Chevy V6 in front. Not especially tuned for hoonage, but certainly capable in a pinch. The hatchback swallows almost anything, all but the driver's seat folds down for really long loads. With this long wheelbase Epsilon, the back seats recline and move fore and aft, no lack of legroom for towering teenagers. Or really fat relatives...

Granted, the interior will not stun you with gee-whiz wizardry, but it's pretty well organized and functional, and almost hose-out-able. No major mechanical issues with this car, and when fully loaded on the freeway I get about 28-30 MPG, in full vacation driving mode (80 MPH+, A/C on, etc.). If I slow down to speed limits, I get over 30-33 MPG, which I have been doing more and more lately.

As much as I love cars, and considering that the only way I could piss away my money faster is to spend all of it at the bar, it's hard to beat the basic Chevy for my next ten years of driving. I will spend the majority of that time commuting, and the few times during the year, I will be on the freeway where this car has good mileage considering it's size. It fits my garage and my budget. Once this thing is done, then it's on to something nicer.

Ummm I would drive provided that I have the money, country, etc...

Mazdaspeed 3 or Mazda 3. Manual tranny

Previous generation Subaru Impreza WRX, say like 2006-2007.

A Subaru Legacy, doesn't matter if sedan or wagon with the 2.5T engine or 2.5 engine

A Holden Commodore/Pontiac G8 V6

BMW 3 series, but I don't think the electronics are going to last that far

For a car that I would use for 10 years I would look for: simplicity (name it electronic, mechanical...) and proven componentry

Given this, all cars must be manual and with the most basic equipment, with no electronic BS

Another vote for an E39 M5... as much as I hate giving up a coupe, with one vehicle I'd probably like 4 doors. I do schlep my daughter around in an E46 Coupe right now, and getting her into the car seat is time consuming, but I certainly don't mind.

If the spouse is allowed a vehicle (ie, newish Land Rover or BMW SUV), I'd probably opt for an E46 M3 BMW. It's gotta be something I can tinker with myself, so the latest BMWs are out, but the previous gen is pretty easy to tinker with.

I am assuming that even with the crazy restrictions placed on this question that my wife is allowed "one" vehicle also..She gets the Odyssey for family duty....Do I have to choose a car actually available in the U.S.?(where I live)

with no restriction Audi RS4 Avant (B7 platform)

otherwise Audi RS4 (B7) or BMW E39 M5 (previous generation)

993 Porsche 911 Coupe

Narrow body: check
Air cooled: check
RWD: check
Ass-engined: check

A proper Porsche with some modern touches that (with the 17s) can be daily driven with full reliability and utility (lotsa room with the rear seats down).

Jeep Wrangler-

2 Door SUV and a covertible.
I know it's not ideal for shlepping things like furniture (last time I did that I hired someone, next time will do the same) or mulch (I live in a condo and am not exactly sure what that is- can assume I'll never need to transport all that much of it). It will happily accomodate me and the not-yet-found wife (or girlfriend for that matter). I don't own any hand tools but assume a guy with a wrench can fix whatever goes wrong with it over the next 10 years and lest we forger...Chrysler's lifetime warranty!

Or an Audi A4 with all the fixin's- I could go either way

Frank:

I did the same thing in Atlanta traffic with 5-speed Ranger 4x4. I feel your pain, man! I loved that truck (4.0L V6 was bulletproof), but that routing got old. The preferred solution was not replacing the truck but relocating! :-)

Truth is, if I could only have 1 vehicle, I'd go with something similar to that Ranger. I might even cross over to the dark side and get a Tacoma!

Frank,

As a fellow Atlantan, the trick is to live ITP and drive to work OTP. That way you can just watch the people sitting in traffic, as I do every day driving up 85. Granted, it's really expensive and I will probably have to move OTP soon…

@Brendino: I chose the Mazda5 last year to replace my 10-year old Miata (busted bearing), knowing that this would be my ride for the next decade. It's doing fine so far, a commuter as well as ferrying a kid or three in car seats, and rare hauling. MPG: 23-25 mixed city/highway.

Here's Karesh's review:http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/1598/

Audi A3, V6 and Quattro and DSG. OR VW Passat 3.6 4 Motion with DSG. So close in spec's, but I haven't driven either so it's a tough call.

Practical, year round usability, DSG=Fun for me, easy for wife. And room for the kids (when they arrive which I would expect in the next 10 years...)

If the GTI came with 4Motion I'd be all over that but it doesn't, so I go bigger.

Another for the 2009 Fit.

The 1995 saturn SC1 gets more mileage put on it than the 2004 Mazda6 hatch, because of gas costs already.

The Fit combines the properties of both: frugality, reliability, and tons of haul-shit, and is likely to hold up to a decade better than the saturn in the creeks-and-squeaks department.

My sister has a 2007 Fit and absolutely adores it, and if I want fast, I go take one of the motorcycles to a trackday.

The only other one would be a 2009 Prius. Except the car is sooooooooo boring. The Fit drives well, the Prius is a monument to Bland.
