In a few years, we might not have much of a domestic car industry anymore. And I’ll be grumpy, because despite all the stupid General Motors made out over the years, from crappy products (Equinox) to crappily built products (everything from 1972 to 2002), they really had some cars that were fascinating to car lovers. And that’s part of why they’re going out of business: they made interesting cars with mediocrity. They should have stuck to Toyota’s business plan and made extremely boring cars very well. In Europe, though, that’s what GM did. I’ve just driven the Vauxhall Zafira, and I can tell you that if GM had it in America they’d be trillionaires. Because it’s the most boring car I’ve ever driven.]]></description>

The Renault R4, the Fiat Uno and Punto, Peugeots 205 to 207, the early Golfs-- they were all affordable and fun to drive with more character than Marcello Mastroianni. By the same token, I hate what Lee Iacocca called PODS. Lido was referring to Chryslers, but plenty of manufacturers have built cars for Poor Old Dumb Shits. PODS-mobiles are often Russian; Lada leading the pack. More recently, they hail from Korea or Malaysia. They&#39;re cheap to buy, miserable to operate and not at all economical to own (as CityRover owners found out). When considering Europe&#39;s cheapest car-- the Romanian-built Dacia Logan-- you have to wonder if the penalty box tradition continues.</p> ]]></description>

The Li-ion-powered Tesla Roadster is simultaneously sold out and yet not in production. Dozens of other miraculous EV&#8217;s are just a $5k deposit and an infinitely adjustable (and not so inevitable) delivery date away. Meanwhile, down at your local Zap dealer, the banner proclaims: &#8220;saving the planet, one vehicle at a time.&#8221; And their Xebra is all charged-up and ready to roll.</p> ]]></description>

I also conjure-up a trip to France in a sonorous, serious, quick-steering Giulia, where I felt like a character in a Truffaut movie. So, will the 147 be another driver&#8217;s Alfa that rasps, bites and feels alive?</p>]]></description>

That seems a bit of a strange statement, as there are already plenty of cars capable of besting the freshly-minted mandate. From Japan to Jerusalem, from Mumbai to Milan, the world is filled, and filling, with suitably fuel efficient passenger cars. The real question is whether or not America is ready-- make that &#8220;willing&#8221;-- to buy the same sort of frugal machines that the rest of the world has been driving for years. Take the Fiat Grande Punto. Please.</p> ]]></description>

First, the Scorpio is an extremely comfortable long-distance cruiser over tortured tarmac. And second, I&#39;m not getting signs of early arthritis; I&#8217;ve just been driving the wrong car.</p> ]]></description>

After the small voice in your head counts down to zero, the truck launches with all the fury of&#8230; Well, I&#8217;m getting a bit ahead of myself here. Suffice it to say, you don&#8217;t have to be a Three Stooges Fan to know that something completely ridiculous can also make you laugh with delight.</p> ]]></description>

The German uber-tuners are the world&#8217;s largest purveyor of $100k+ automobiles, and deservedly so. Meanwhile, Alpina has been tweaking BMW&#8217;s in a similarly monstrous fashion since 1961. Unlike AMG, Alpina remains independent from the corporate mothership upon which it depends (although it builds its models at Bimmer&#8217;s factories). Hence Merc sells 25 AMG cars for every Alpina and brings AMG&#8217;s to market in strict cadence with their &#8220;normal&#8221; siblings. Hence Alpina sells Americans their B7, an M7 in all but name, only when they&#8217;re good and ready to do so. So now they&#8217;re ready. Are we?</p> ]]></description>

Despite this success, Tesla&#39;s hyper-exotic may offer more hype than hope. The company won&#39;t allow expert evaluation of their product until it&#39;s &#34;ready for market.&#34; Even before they&#39;ve delivered a single Roadster, they&#39;re promising two additional, mass market electric vehicles-- whose enabling technology is, at best, under-developed. Meanwhile, they&#39;ve raised $60m in venture capital and secured $20m in state subsidies to build a New Mexican factory. Unfortunately, GM&#8217;s bean counters confirmed what common sense suggested: labor costs, transportation costs, unfavorable exchange rates and competitive pricing preclude the possibility of profit. Maximum Bob was undeterred, claiming GM will build the &#8220;Saturn Astra&#8221; in the US if it succeeds (i.e. loses them lots of money). All of which raises an important question: does the Astra have what it takes to sell stateside?</p> ]]></description>

So, at the risk of being blacklisted for naughtiness, I ask in TTAC fashion whether Santa&#8217;s immortal sleigh is a timeless classic or an outdated dud.</p>]]></description>

If the Pagani Zonda is a &#34;mouse&#34;, then an F15 is a &#34;plane&#34;.  Plant your right foot in a C12S and the AMG-fettled Mercedes V12 barks, roars, howls and then screams like a wounded grizzly.  Any lion with an ounce of self-preservation would run for his life.  </p><p>And not make it ten yards.  When thrashing the Zonda on the twisting two-lane highway above Modena, there was one long straight.  For the first and only time, I was free to explore the mystery known as &#34;third gear&#34;.  Those of you who&#39;ve driven a race car flat out might appreciate the resulting rush.  I doubt it.  On a track, you don&#39;t need to watch out for Italian truck drivers coming from the opposite direction (using the racing line).  Flooring the Pagani Zonda on a public road hurts your brain, blows your mind AND loosens your bowels. </p>]]></description>

For over thirty-five years, Brits &#34;in the know&#34; have considered the obscure automaker&#39;s products to be the embodiment of English hand built quality and understated exclusivity.  Unfortunately, motoring journalists need not apply.  In fact, Bristol actively discourages any sort of publicity for its current cars.  A test drive is &#34;out of the question&#34;.     </p><p>A few weeks before the end of my English adventure, I gave Bristol one last try.  I immediately recognised the cut-glass accent on the other end of the phone: Tony Crook, former RAF pilot, racing driver and the undisputed Emperor of Bristol Motor Cars.  Luckily, the octogenarian and self-professed &#34;living legend&#34; didn&#39;t recognise my voice.  Mr. Crook agreed to a &#34;five-minute chat&#34;.  </p>]]></description>

A really fast car. A car so absurdly rapid that you&#39;d stop for the police because you&#39;re a law-abiding citizen-not because you have to. The only trouble is money. To buy anything monstrously quick with enough finesse to keep you on the road, you&#39;re going to have to pay mortgage money to the Germans or Italians. Sure, you could modify a Rice Burner, but that ain&#39;t cheap either, and a bit too Fast and Furious for style conscious Brits. Then check out the Ultima Can Am.</p><p>You want fast? In all my Ferrari-owning, Lambo-loving, Pagani pestering life, I have never driven a road car as searingly quick as the Ultima Can Am. Pop in the light but solid clutch, press the starter button, give her some revs, release the clutch and objects in front of you are suddenly closer than they appear. Wind it up to the 6000 rpm redline and you&#39;re issuing a direct challenge to your brain to compute information as fast as it&#39;s being received. This at the same time that the G-force is throwing you back into your seat, the wind is trying to tear your head off, and the engine is screaming, &#39;Look at me! I&#39;m a RACE CAR!&#39; Luckily, the Can Am&#39;s 18&#39; tyres maintain a death grip on the tarmac- giving drivers freedom to pick bugs out of their teeth while recovering from endorphin overload.</p>]]></description>
