What do old transmission parts, license plates and inner tubes have in common? Other than being set dressing for Sanford and Son, they're the latest in chichi home and fashion accessories. Wall Street Journal reports that several artists and designers are raiding the junkyards and landfills to make, among other things, purses from inner tubes, lamps from transmission gears and jewelry from old license plates. The benefit, according to WSJ's Elva Ramirez, is "feel-good points for reducing landfills one tire and gear-shift cog at a time." So what's next– a set of bookends made from a pair of smart cars?

Re: the caption, I don’t let an artist work on my car and I don’t buy my art from a mechanic. Although someone who was an artist/mechanic might be interesting, until they decided your transmission was just the thing for their new project. Or they needed it to defeat someone who is part of a martial arts army of extraordinary magnitude.

Surprisingly OLD news. I made a nice wine rack out of an old Buick aluminum V8, and a wine rack-coffee table combo out of a Vega block. In the mid-70s.
Candle holders, table lamps, coffee tables, bar stools, they have all been made (and sold a auto flea markets) for years and years.
Like the Smart car bookends line though.
