In invite the Best and Brightest to send me examples of big discounts on new cars for publication, from any brand. Send jpegs to robert.farago@thetruthaboutcars.com. BTW: I saw a TV ad today advertising Chevy Malibus for $18k. The fine print (which I barely caught): one owner cars. Desperate times.

Here in Detroit, even during the boom years, I’ve regularly seen 15 to 25% off list prices advertised on Corvettes in the Detroit papers. It makes me laugh when I read those reviews saying “GM has no problem selling every Corvette they make.” or something to that effect.

Dont forget that corvettes lose nearly half their value in 3 years.

Listen, you will always have ads that trumpet huge discounts and unattainable prices. That is the way it is. Bottom line is dealers have an invoice price. And they strive to stay at or above that mark somehow, someway. The unfortunate part of GM’s latest “loyalty” campaign is that dealers are tempted to offer these discounts to everyone. Regardless of their eligigbility.

This cash back are nothing more than a “discount”. It fails to let us know what the certificate will go toward. If the discount going toward MSRP than it is worthless. If the “Certificate” goes toward invoice plus rebate, plus anther $5000 off on all GM POS that is a deal.

Hyundai Canada is offering Accents for $9,995 Canadian (about $8000 U.S.) PLUS they are offering 0% financing for 3 years with this price!

If that’s too much, see if you can qualify for the $500 graduate rebate program………..
