@Michael Karesh:

I think the IS300 is one of the most undervalued, underappreciated cars out there. They now, as you no doubt are aware, make a fantastic used deal.

In terms of your request, I think you'll find that most of us agree with you. But packaging, fuel economy, platform development/sharing cost differences, and the need to sell to people in the Northeast has really cut into that possibility. In reality, I think the modern version of what you describe is the Subaru WRX. It is, however, too damn heavy.

Sales will be limited for any coupe.

The hole I've been begging manufacturers to fill ever since the original IS300 arrived as a Lexus instead of a Toyota:

--four doors, even better a hatch
--3000 pounds
--RWD
--225 or so horsepower
--$25,000

Who'll deliver it first?

All,
don't forget the hyundai genesis coupe rwd which supposedly is already out (?!?). That car meets most of the criteria: rwd, less than 3000lb, around 20-25k.

@drifter:

The Crossfires are a fantastic cheap value, especially the supercharged models.

Unfortunately, no Crossfire is eligible for the cheap gas program, which excludes all SRT models, the Sprinter, Viper, Crossfire, Wrangler, Wrangler Unlimited, and Challenger.

With the Solstice targa, the hardtop Miata, the Tobaru and the Nissan Silvia all rumored, it looks like a nice little RWD-cheap-car war is coming. It's great that the next battlefield will not be ring lap times, but fun-for-fuel ratio. I for one welcome the new driftable cheap cars.

@quasimondo:
I'd argue the only people that lament the passing of the 240SX (or even remember it) are those who know exactly what the Silvia is. So why not call the new one a Silvia? Besides, we now have the GT-R so lets keep the naming the same!

I can't wait for 2010-2011. New Toyobaru RWD coupe, new Silvia. Just wish Mazda would produce the Kabura concept of 2006. The world can't have enough $20k, four cylinder RWD coupes.

2700 lbs would be nice, but I don't know if they could pull it off. My 89 240 with SR20 swap weighs 2600lbs (no weight reduction done) and it doesn't have modern crash protection or A/C. Something in the 2800-2900 may be more doable, but I'd expect something around 3000 pounds or so. The lightest Z33 (350Z/G35) architecture weighs in at 32xx IIRC. So a couple hundred pounds off is about all we can expect.

The Silvia is basically the Mustang of Japan... it needs to exist! But what made it look good in the past was that it was long and low, and cars just don't have those proportions anymore. I don't know how I'm ever going to buy a new car with that way of thinking...

A nice 170hp 2.0 N/A 4 cylinder that revs smoothly and is not based off a truck engine (k25) and a turbo'd 2.0 version that makes 240hp - all fit in a 2700lb 2 door 2+2 coupe. $20k for N/A version and $25k for Turbo.

A lighter 350Z would be a nice touch. The Z has the distinction of being the cheapest convertible I can fit in without amputation, but it's rather expensive and, well, more deliberate than fun. Taking a few pounds off the nose would go a long way to improving the car.

Besides, who wants to sit in the back seat of a two-door, four-seat sports car anyways?

Seeing how the Silvia name is unknown to the general U.S. population, I think it would be smarter if they returned to the SX naming instead.
