I don't get VW. They keep talking about being a value brand in the US and attacking Toyota. Meanwhile, every new product takes them further upscale.

They should hire yournamehere as chief of US product planning. He'd do much better than anyone in the past 20 years.

Well, the pictures have certainly improved my view of the Scirocco -- I now want the 1970's one more than ever.

And if I want the new Scirocco stateside, all I need to do is purchase a Volvo C30, so that's good news as well.

No Eos, to close to the Passat.

@yournamehere:

Those two cars aren't even remotely close to each other. At least you could call the Eos the Passat convertible, since they share...most everything.

And why kill the GTI? It's the daddy of all hot hatches. Practical performance. I think the Scirocco is the odd man out.

It seems to me that VW is almost ashamed of their past. I don't know about you guys, but when I think of Volkswagen, I think of inexpensive, well-made practical small and mid-sized cars that can be quite fun. The old Beetle. The Rabbit. The Fox. The push upmarket just seems a bit unwarranted to me.

The Sirocco pics make me laugh, love the VW guy somewhere caught between the car of his teenage years and todays thoughtless re-construct. Great job at copying a car from the 70's guys. The new car needed to be further away from the GTI line as J.B. has pointed out, and I completely agree. They're going to pull the same bull as before. Release it in Europe for a while, make us beg for it, the drop it on the US market at a price point higher than the GTI. Fanboys start collecting cash!

Katie: "A passat CC? erm…why? What’s wrong with the Eos?"

In this case, the CC in Passat CC doesn't mean "coupe/cabrio", they use it as "Comfort Coupe". It's not a convertable like the Eos.

Meocuchad:

Since the Scirocco is built on the GTI plaform and shares the same drivetrain, there's not much technical difference. I think it exists to make a "Sporting" version of the GTI (e.g. impractical and sexay) for Europe since in the Eurozone the GTI is still seen by many as a Golf and thus still somewhat of a "family car".

It's probably that same reason we won't see the new 'rocco in North America, we see the GTI as "sporting" and a lot of 'Merkin drivers already see the GTI as an impractical small car (compared to our SUV/CUX luxo-machines).

So... forgive my ignorance, because I haven't read too much into the Scirocco...
However, what exactly is the big difference (read: selling point) between it and the Rabbit/Golf/GTI?

my dream VW of America...

Polo TSI & TDI - $12,000->$16,000
Rabbit 2.5l & TDI - $15,000->$20,000
Jetta 2.5l & TDI - $16,000->$21,000
Scirocco badged as GTI - 2.0T - $22,000->$27,000
Passat CC (replaces Passat) 2.0T, 3.2l, TDI - $22,000->$30,000
Tiguan - 2.0T & TDI - $22,000->$27,000

No Touareg, gas it to expensive. No Eos, to close to the Passat.

They have the products to be successful, they just have to much extra fluff. They need to bring the Polo over, which it appears they will. The rabbit and jetta are fine, and seem to sell well. Not enough ppl know/care about the Scirocco to use that name, so bring it over but call it the GTI, its name is strong enough to stand on its own. Bring the Passat CC, but kill the standard Passat. maybe a convertible version also. I feel the tiguan is going to be a huge hit, its the right size for the current market. The Touareg and Eos can just go onto the great parking lot in the sky. I could also see a market for a small fwd pickup with the 2.5l or TDI engine.

but this is all alot easier to type then it is to actually go out and do it. VWs problem is they over lap with-in them selfs and with-in audi. Hopefully porsche will sort things out, they seem to know how to run a car company pretty good.
