“The new BMW Z4 is larger than its predecessor measuring 148mm longer at 4,239mm and 9mm wider at 1,790mm, and this results in greater interior space and luggage capacity. With the roof up, headroom has been increased by 44mm while the greater car width and design enhancements have led to 20mm more shoulder room and 43mm more elbow room.”

Wow, the rear is styled much better than on the previous Z4, and really is a much more cohesive design than its over-Bangled predecessor. This is actually a very good looking car now, and I think this will be a much less polarizing design.

Nicely done…Most retractable hardtop cars have a huge badonkadonk of a trunk, butt this one does not.
I hereby declare this to be the best resolved retractable hardtop sports car design yet.

I can really see the influence of the Concept CS BMW showed last year (that I thought looked great). For the most part I think this is a good looking car (mainly the corner views). What I don’t like are the ribs down the side. They don’t seem to flow with any specific line on the car and the lower rib looks really out of place when next to the door’s lower seam. Not sure yet if this design is better than the last Z4…

I think that it’s much better…now if they’d just get rid of those dents in the chassis, it would be an instant winner.

Hmm, I am one of the few apparently that likes the current Z4 better than this one. I have liked the current Z4, Bangle and all, since it came out. This new one looks too much like a 6-series, which I find to be one of the ugliest cars ever made.

Yawn. Who would lay out hard earned money on a car that is hopelessly outclassed by a better performing sports car costing thousands of dollars less?

Finally, they’ve listened. What we all want is increased interior space and trunk space in our two-seater roadsters. Let’s hope it weighs a lot more too.
Nice design overall, though the side looks like someone didn’t iron properly.

You’re better off with a Corvette.
December 13th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
I will never understand the retractable hardtop fad. It’s just more weight on a roadster. I’ll take a cloth top anyday…
December 13th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Everything has to get bigger doesn’t it.
December 13th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Wow…. just wow…
Finally, BMWs look good again! It’s so great that they “promoted” Bangle so that he can’t muck up these fabulous machines..

when i see the side profile all i see is a convertible tiburon.
December 13th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Looks more like an evolved Z8 and not nearly so ridiculous as the current car. Very nice.
December 13th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
It looks like money. Mission accomplished.
The kidney grilles border on lurid. Let’s hope future iterations are more subdued. Toggle back and forth between these two pictures for some idea just how ridiculous they’ve become:

Stretching the bounds of good taste, this.

I’ll have the old one, thanks.

U G L Y, You aint got not alibi!

The previous Z4s had been so banglized that it’s hard to get any worse. This one has somewhat cleaner lines everywhere except the front, which I can’t quite stomach. How do these designs ever manage to see the light of day?
December 14th, 2008 at 2:55 am
Too many lines! I’ll take the Mazda.
December 14th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
We can only hope that BMW has eliminated those awful run flat tires (RFT) from this, and other future generation models.
December 14th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Much better than the Z3 or current Z4. It loses a little appeal with the top up but still very good for a convertible. Let’s just hope they managed to keep the weight down so it’ll drive as good as it looks.
December 14th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
History won’t be kind to the Bangle era.

BobJava - the complaints of the average buyer are usually along the lines of your statement. Which is rather ironic. If you ask majority of buyers (the ones that do not read blogs because they’re trying to meet their tee times) of the older Z3 and Z4, you’ll find that they think the car was too small.
People tend to think their car is too small - until the car tends to be viewed as too large. And that’s when a smaller replacement comes out to reset everything back the way it was.
December 14th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Sad to hear it got bigger. I hope the weight is not up. For some reason I thought this was actually going to be lighter, wishful thinking I guess. The styling is ok. I like the side view but the front is too busy.
December 14th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
do. not. want.
December 14th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Beltline still a bit too high, and the windhield angle is waayyy too steep. Miata & S2000 are both nicer.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Not a bad looking car, but for my money I’d still take the Boxster.
