v539196wchquasv.jpgAlfa's new compact car– the MI.To– is the real deal. After months of spy pictures, an ill-fated naming contest (in which Alfa rejected the name "Furiosa" chosen by voting fans) and copious amounts of internet speculation, we've finally got official shots of the new car that's being hyped as the first credible MINI fighter (other than the FIAT 500, selling in a class below the MINI). The stunning small car will holster engines drawn from the usual Alfa-Fiat family range, from 90 to 155 horsepower gas and diesel variants. Rumor says the MI.To is based– at least somewhat– on the Fiat Grande Punto, with major league revisions to the suspension, NVH, sheetmetal, and interior. Alfa puts the car on sale in July to celebrate Chevy Volt prototype testing. Just kidding. Obviously.

Alfa needs to come back to the United States “pronto.” Alfa probably needs a partner in the U.S. Ford? GM? Alfa could make the body, ship it to the U.S, and maybe one of the big 2.8 could supply the market-specific engines and other components.

I think Alfa could make a bologna sandwich sexy..

Very nice! But let me guess…. won’t be available state-side?

That’s a sharp little ride. I’ll add it to my list of cars I’m disappointed we won’t get in the US.

    Detroit1701,

If either of the American car companies or Cerebrus were to slip any part of their corporate tallywacker into this car, it would be the kiss of death.

Hey Cerebrus, you have no desirable product in your pipeline. Make a deal, get this thing imported, and at least draw some foot traffic into your morgues, I mean dealerships.

Alfa has been playing with plans to return to the U.S. in the next few years. This car would most definitely be on sale here if it actually comes to fruition.

    Very nice, except the name…

Especially liking the view from the side.

Well it’s already got the new T-Bird taillights, inverted Subaru Tribeca grill and a front-end underbite. I guess it’s almost ready for the U.S. Add in legendary Italian build quality and maybe a few Pontiac fake scoops & strakes and you’ve got it.

So is that an outdoors 69? ;-)

Hot little car. I like the reference to the Competizione C8, and it looks much better than the angular look some alfas (147, for example) have.

I love the MPG of the Mini and the driving dynamics. I would love to have those same qualities in a sexier package.

One more thing though…Petrol engines up to 230HP instead of 155, from a 1.8 Turbo engine yet to be launched this year in the new Lancia Delta.

Agreed. Not to mention an interior that wouldn’t make grown men cry and epileptics have a seizure.
