Presidential Candidate John McCain raised a few metaphorical eyebrows last week when he reversed an earlier, federalist policy position. The Senator from Arizona stepped-up to an MI microphone and declared he'd [now] support California's quest to supercede federal automotive C02 regs (i.e. set higher corporate average fleet mpg averages than the feds). According to The Detroit News, the Senator from Arizona has, uh, reconciled his position on the matter. "Later Friday, a senior campaign aide sought to clarify McCain's position. The aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said McCain supports the ability of states to impose regulations until a national 'cap and trade' program to limit carbon emissions, something McCain has proposed, is in place. Once carbon caps are established, the aide said, McCain would oppose state regulations." So McCain will oppose California's tailpipe regs… later. Which means the statement "It's hard for me to tell the states they can't set their own standards… At the end of the day, I think states should make their own decisions" was premature recapitulation.

The carbon emission cap and trade program would be an absolute nightmare. We may never manufacture anything here in the US again.

Once again McCain doing all he can to lose the election. Really, how hard of an issue is this to decide one way or another and move forward?
This is why every gd politician ought to be voted out at the end of their first and only term. He’s been playing the game way too long.

I believe McCain holds the patent on flip-flop meta stability …

Meta-stable is probably the best descriptive word for a politician I’ve come across.

Sometimes I am surprised how do you Americans make choices. You have 2 man standing next to each other ,one is flip flopping all the time, has a slow speech fluency, has memory problems, the other has a n impeccable voting record, sharp mind, always backed up by facts, always backed up by smartest economists, fluent, honest, always puts principles of honesty higher than himself. But you don`t vote for him. And it is Ron Paul. What is that reason that you don`t vote for him? Now Obama and Cain just fake their positions by pale imitation of Paul`s concepts.
How does McCain plan to push through carbon emission caps, if whole US energy production is primarily based on fossil coal powerplants? Coal is cheap, US is bankrupt. Even Europe was more far sighted and started Nuclear Fusion programs to be gas/coal independent. Why does my little fucking Latvia has to buy emission quotes from Europe for every single plant, while US is the biggest polluter in the world and has no plans signing Kyoto protocol?
I guess the world still lives in illusion that US is an empire. But Empire is an entity, that makes complex indispensable systems for world economy and yelds to its flourishing. The strength of it is measured by labour intense hours to be counterweighted not by Army size.

jurisb the popularity contest for fearless leader must past the BarBQ test. In other words, which fearless leader wannabe would you want to have over for a weekend BarBQ.
I’m leaning towards Barack even though he’s a bit Wonky. He’d probably have no problem keeping the kids busy over at the basketball net while everything is cooking.
John McCain might scare the kids away.
Ron Paul would probably get all the adults excited about all this fiat money that were pushing overseas to cover our over-consumptive ways. We can’t have that while cooking steaks on the barbie.

The United States needs a credible Green party so that the other two (one?) can stop pretending.
Heck, the US could use a credible left-wing party. As a left-winger myself, I’d probably get physically sick every time I voted Democrat.

This is what happens when the GOP chooses a candidate by default rather than by preference. All their other candidates simply imploded, so they were left with Grandpa McCain.
McCain supposedly loves foreign policy and disdains domestic, (although he’s not too clear on the finer points of either), so this is par for the course. He doesn’t care (and therefore doesn’t understand) enough about this stuff to set a firm direction for his staff. McCain could have gotten away with this in 2000, when he was younger and sharper, and when the internet was mainly the province of libertarians and there was no YouTube.
The only reason McCain isn’t below 40% in national polls is thatthe traditional media slobbers over McCain. They love him. They ignore gaffes that, had Obama comitted them, would have been in the news for weeks.

In other owrds, McCain supports each state’s right to make their own laws unless it contradicts a federal law that he supports. My, isn’t that big of him.
By the way, I didn’t vote for McCain or Obama in the primaries, but i’llprobably hold my nose and vote for McCain in the general election. Though I haven’t made up my mind 100%, I figure a Democrat controlled congress with a democrat for president would allow the government to get too much done. I prefer a government that has a hard time getting things done, i.e. more regulations and spending.
