Why is it that everybody is so worried when the Brits get draconian on congestion? This kind of stuff has been in practice for years in Singapore, Tokyo, Paris, to mention a few.

More to the point, when I was a kid I bought a banger in California, drove it to NYC, and promptly got towed for parking on the wrong side of the street. (It was one of these Monday: left side, Tuesday: right side streets). Cost me 200 bucks to get the car back — a Chevy Nova I had bought for $600. This was 1982, I was furious, but did it mean the U.S. was a bad place?

You drive a car, you (should) know the rules, you pay the fine when you goof off. Before it was a cliche, the expression was: get over it.

They have gone from being run by tyrants, to being run by different tyrants – themselves.

I would bet that if you ran the numbers you would find that the people who are realize they are negatively affected by this nonsense are in the minority. Take out all the folks who have been brainwashed by the greens, the people so rich they don’t care, the people who rarely need to use a car very much, the people who don’t need to business during the day, etc.

I bet you are left with the people who really do most of the hard work and pay most of the taxes. They are being out voted by the rest.

Fifteen years ago it was just as expensive. My girlfriend parked her car in London in what looked like a perfectly legal spot. An hour later we returned to a patch of road with two (wet) yellow stripes. Nary a sign in sight, tow the car and paint the stripes.

The “it was a legal parking place an hour ago” never does fly with bureaucrats. Two hundred pounds later… And it’s still an Austin Metro with a dodgy MOT.

I’d don’t know that I’d bother with a car if I lived in or frequented London.

And, that’s exactly the point of all of these regulations. As I said yesterday, why don’t they just get on with it and ban cars altogether.

I feel sorry for the enthusiasts in England. Cost of living and owning a car there must be astronomical. I’d don’t know that I’d bother with a car if I lived in or frequented London.

Does this mean they are going to promtly fix faulty meters. I’m sure its and act of Congress(or Parlament in their case) to appeal one of these tickets if the meter screwed you.

I guess they are trying to make it not worth owning a car, or living in the UK if you actually like or need to drive.

To think, the first parking ticket I got was for a whopping $5 in Washington DC, no less (in 1979).

The question is whether one of the dominant political parties will seize on this issue and try to ride it into power. I’m assuming here that the Brits are as fond of their cars as Americans are, so I can’t believe there’s not a huge reserve of resentment simmering under the surface and just waiting for an opportunistic politician to take advantage of it.

The alternative is to believe that the British have lost, not their minds, but their legendary backbones, and are happy shuffling off to the buses as they are instructed to do by their betters.

I lived in England in the 1970’s and have many happy memories, especially of great drives in my 1969 Triumph Spitfire MkIII. I just don’t recognize that country anymore. It seems everyone got into hard core alcohol abuse and generally lost their minds. How could rational people put up with this?
