Well said, I can't agree more! Experienced another automotive miracle this evening in the garage: a once-thought dead 6x9 woofer turned out to be merely disconnected after 100+ miles of open tracking with a loose fire extinguisher in the trunk. If I had a stereo shop do the install, I'd never know the truth about my car.

$180 goes back in my pocket come Monday: just more proof that we can't live without our garages.

Excellent Article. I emailed to my father and brothers. We all had a great time recalling the lessons taught and lessons learned in the garage.

I have many fond and not so fond garage/driveway memories. Aches, pains, doubts, screw-ups, some successes.
There is one thing maybe others have noticed. When working on the car, and the radio on, and especially when doing some sort of difficult procedure, have you noticed when later you here the same thing on the radio, whether spoken word or music, it brings the original experience right back. And the nostalgia it invokes often leaves out the pain? :)

The genuine "shadetree mechanic" is truly a dying breed. Some of my earliest memories are of my dad out in his garage fixing something on our '49 Plymouth. He did all his own auto repair, and even painted our '56 Chevy in there. He can no longer take car of his own cars because of his eyesight and the complexity of today's computer-enhanced drivetrains, but he still keeps his workshop ready should one of us drop by for an oil change or to do some minor repairs.

Great article Bryan, we need the garage. We should try and do as much to our cars are possible although it is becoming harder and harder to do so.
