Ford Mustang Vs Chevrolet Camaro. And The Winner Is…

On The Booth Babe’s last article, TTAC commentator, LALoser, stated that he originally thought that I was the Booth Babe! He based this theory “because of the just below the surface Anti-Americanism.” So to address this accusation, I decided to blog the following…

Consumer Reports pitted the Ford Mustang against the Chevrolet Camaro to find out which of the poster children for American muscle cars is the best. In the comparison, Consumer Reports puts the Ford Mustang V6 Premium against the Chevrolet Camaro 2LT. The first round was price. The Ford Mustang costs $28,660 whereas the Chevrolet Camaro costs $28,195. 1-0 to the Oshawa built bad-boy. Then it all went downhill for the Camaro. Consumer Reports said that the Ford’s V6 engine was more refined than the Camaro’s, had stronger acceleration and better fuel economy. Oh dear. But that wasn’t to say that the Camaro didn’t have good acceleration, because it did, but the Camaro weighs 300 pounds more than the Mustang.

4-1 to the Mustang.

Result? Mustang won. Says Consumer Reports: “Only the Ford is recommended. The Mustang has an excellent reliability record with the old V6; we expect this one to be similar. The Camaro is too new for us to have reliability data. “

David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports’ test center said that “the Mustang is the more agile and enjoyable car to drive of the two,”. But what say you, B&B? Do you agree? Or do you think that the Camaro kick’s arse more than the Mustang?

"the biggest issue I have with the Camaro is that they didn’t finish the tuning. it drives as if they got 85% of the way done and were told “that’s good enough, move on to something else”. GM has talented people who can tune that platform (witness G8) well, but they were somehow kept from finishing the job." Classic GM, nothing much has changed. I see these abominations all the time (my commute takes me past the factory) and fit and finish leaves a bit to be desired also. I was behind one yesterday on the 401, SS version, panel gaps were all over the place. Either that or the guy had a body stuffed in the trunk! And no, I don't subscribe to that Clarksonian notion that only murderers drive camaros!

I have always been a GM man. My niece has a 2010 Camaro and I drove it. It was really fun to drive, but I couldn't live with the blind spots - the A pillars and C pillars are bad. Then, I test drove a Mustang. I bought the Mustang. I absolutely love the Mustang and find it to be the funner car to drive.

You are a good sport Cammy! If ever in Honolulu, give me a shout. BTW: How 'bout a test between some fine vintage iron...like the Pinto VS Vega?...or not...

Mustang 2010 and up vs the camaro is the clear winner. Better HP produced per liter, lighter, superior handling, looks the part (not cartoon like), longer heritage and to top it off the 2011 5.0 was clear competition for a BMW M3 at over $25,000.00 less! The driver that thrashed both the m3 and the 2011 5.0 mustang around the test track mentioned the camaro SS would have been crushed! Looks like Chevy's 6.2 liter wouldn't mean much against Ford's 5.0 liter or the BMW's 4.0 liter on a road course. As for the ridiculous comments about a solid rear axle on the street, totally ridiculous, Fords current generation of mustangs handle well even of bad pavement, as mentioned for a few $ a couple of upgrades can fully ensure even horrid road conditions are no issue. The potential for suspension upgrades are plentiful taking the mustang even further ahead of its competition. of course not forgetting how easy and relatively inexpensive it is to get a shelby gt 500 into the 700hp zone, the . As for an upcoming Z28, if GM can actually bring it to market, bring it on....be nice to crush it with my 2010 shelby!
