At one point I had the bumpers on my TL repainted and the body shop lost the front plate and frame. I didn't think too much of it, because, after all, the car looked better without it. Then, on a trip to San Francisco, I parked on the street and received a "no front plate" citation... for $120!

I have an inspection sticker that expired last August and I have been surprised not to get ticketed for it yet. My registration is current at least. It's just one of those things many cops don't notice unless you get pulled over.

/should probably take care of it though.

I'm sure the lack of a correctly fitting front license plate bracket will be the least of his worries.

If you're dumb enough to buy a POS, you don't deserve sympathy.

<em>You hit a nerve with your statements. I have watched a police officer let a drunk go because they did not want to have to process them. When I called the officer on it as a witness of the accident the drunk caused, he threatened me. So when I start getting a lecture on driving safely from a law enforcement officer, excuse me if I think maybe one should consider getting a real job!!!!!</em>

westcott,

So, because there are some police officers who are idiots/pricks/a-holes and you experienced a bad cop yourself, that makes them all bad? I'm sorry, but that's just crap.

The vast majority of law enforcement people I know (and I know a lot - my brother is a cop and one of my oldest friends is too) are great folks just doing the best job they can. I can tell you, they don't always like or agree with the laws they enforce, but they do because it's their job.

Law enforcement personnel are put into dangerous positions on a regular basis and often don't get paid a great deal for that. Yes, there are some bad ones just like there are bad doctors, bad teachers, bad quarterbacks (Romo, I'm looking at you), and bad people in every walk of life.

I am glad there are people who can be cops, because I couldn't - I don't have the patience...

@Ronnie Schreiber:

With nine of ten responses expressing white hot loathing, I am not certain that there is any real useful data to be mined.

What's more, in the next few hours I would assume the comments will disappear, a metaphorical plugging of the ears, if you will.

Ronnie Schreiber: "Perhaps in an earlier era, the letter writer would have seen an opportunity and started making aftermarket license plate brackets that actually fit the ‘09 300s."

Good idea. When I was a kid, we'd turn to the J. C. Whitney catalog for such items. They had everything from necker's knobs and carburetors to fuzzy dice and inner tubes. Caveat emptor, though: the ad might promise "No drilling required!" and then the part would arrive with instructions to weld it on.)

Just another "poor excuse" for a dealer if you ask me......The guy should never have accepted delivery. If he refused the car you can bet the dealer would have found a way to install the plate the next morning. Nobody in the sales dept gets paid till the car rolls....Never take delivery of a car if there is anything wrong at delivery, you lose your leverage.

reclusive_in_nature: <em>"For the sake of fairness lets go cherrypick some Toyota or Honda dealership horror stories. They’re out there I promise. I’m sure it’d only take 5 minutes out of the “Boycott GM and Chrysler” schedule."</em>

I'd love to hear a Toyota dealership horror sotry. I haven't had to live one, yet, so I'd be interested to hear what such a horror story is like. Was the coffee over 4 hours old? They'd run out of cookies by the time you arrived for your oil change? Forgot to put the seat back approximately where it was when you got out of the car? Noisy vacuum cleaner used in the service area while one waited for an oil change?

Most of my trips to the Chevy dealer were, if not horror stories, bad enough experiences to further turn me off. Chevy didn't supply a front plate for the car on purchase in a no-front-plate state. When I moved to a front-plate-state, I had to buy it and it was fairly steep charge. But aside from that, they never fixed the car on the first try and if they replaced something "to fix the problem" and it didn't fix the problem, there was no way they were going to make an adjustment on the subesquent bill.

Most trips to the Ford dealer were pretty bad, too, especially the time they rebuilt the tranny and it failed again after 900 mostly highway miles. I'm sooo glad that I wasn't stranded in Iowa after driving down to Missouri to reclaim the car.

Ronnie Schreiber: "Perhaps in an earlier era, the letter writer would have seen an opportunity and started making aftermarket license plate brackets that actually fit the ‘09 300s."

Of all your bad excuses for bad treatment by Detroit and bad reasons for overlooking bad value in a Detroit product, this one really takes the cake. "Nothing wrong at dealer, subject suffers from lack of entrepreneurial spirit in failing to appreciate and act upon suitable opportunity." Get a grip.

Take it from a traffic attorney.

No front plate provides many reasons for the local police to pull you over to look you over if they care to. This is like a busted tail lamp or an expired inspection.

The rationale is that if the motorist has an expired inspection or registration, or a missing plate, then the chances of "no insurance" or "no license" are much, much higher than those where all the little bits of paper are correct.

I was once pulled over by a cop for no inspection. (I was in violation). He was AMAZED that I produced a valid insurance card.

<em>On a related note (at least for Chrysler), the apology blog has crossed the 200 comment milestone. I think its time to launch a Chrysler comments deathwatch…presumably there will be “technical” difficulties on Monday am, but who can say?

What a bunch of clowns.</em>

On the other hand, they're getting consumers' unvarnished opinions. Probably saves money on focus groups and other opinion testing.

I noticed that the Akron/Cleveland area has a lot of cars with no front plates. The other parts of Buckeyetopia don't play so loose and fast with the "rules."

Illinois has an off/on switch for 'cop-ridden hellhole.' On holidays, the newspapers announce that they will be out in full force. Bad weather? They're all at the donut shop.

Don't pull that in Ohio - the cops in Ohio are always on the beat. That's probably how the state stays solvent.

It's been said (in national media) that the Detroit area is a 'cop-ridden hellhole,' but not compared to Illinois, Ohio, or Virginia.

It’s been said (in national media) that the Detroit area is a ‘cop-ridden hellhole,’ but not compared to Illinois, Ohio, or Virginia.

Wow. Must be a slow newsday. For the sake of fairness lets go cherrypick some Toyota or Honda dealership horror stories. They're out there I promise. I'm sure it'd only take 5 minutes out of the "Boycott GM and Chrysler" schedule.

In my company, there would be a directive from the Legal Dept to all dealers. It would have the list of 50 states and which states required install of front plates before the delivery of the car to the customer. It would go out as a formal directive once a year and would tell the dealers that they would be expected to comply with this list. Done deal, no discussion.

I assume Chrysler has someone on their staff that could look up the law for each state and then send out the directive...it would take me less than a week to do this.

<i> <b>TR3Guy:</b> Handing you a racket wrench and screws? I’d attach the plate and drive off with the wrench and return it the next time I took it in for service. </i>

As has been pointed out, a dealership employs 50-60 people and up. Grabbing one at random (a 1:50 chance I got the right person), having them step out of their role at the dealership to get me precisely what I needed (Plus the tools that I did not ask for--I had tools in the trunk.) and back on the road was a real treat and much appreciated.

Continuing the 3-hour trip to the other side of the state with that positive experience engendered a relaxed, positive attitude that lasted the whole weekend.

Disrespect and disappoint the guy that helped me by driving off with the ratchet and socket he borrowed for my benefit? Not me.

A fraudulent state vehicle inspection complaint would probably have gotten this taken care of pretty quickly.

A front plate looks lousy on my Miata but so what? I think it's more a matter of the dealer knowing and hiding it. The plate would have been mounted otherwise. How hard could it be to figure it out?

I live in Ohio and don't run a front plate on six of my seven cars.

I get ticketed five or six times a year. Usually the cop picks at random between ticketing me for the tag or for the 20% tint.

This is the same state where they sent a bunch of child-molesting daycare workers home with probation.

What is this world coming to? I thought everyone knew that anything can be attached with baling wire or duct tape...

Detroit-Iron: Try Virginia. .. My friend lived in CO and had his windows tinted there. When he moved to VA he got a ticket the day after he changed his plates because the tint was too dark.

Yeah, Virginia is pretty anal about speed limits too. But I'm glad at least one state is serious about cracking down on mafiamobiles. Overly dark tints are unsafe for both the people inside a car and those outside.

Finally, I would have thought the federal law that standardized plate size would also require provision for attaching them. Even a FMVSS might address this.

On a related note (at least for Chrysler), the apology blog has crossed the 200 comment milestone. I think its time to launch a Chrysler comments deathwatch...presumably there will be "technical" difficulties on Monday am, but who can say?

You are telling me either the owner or dealership can't make a license plate holder fit? Doesn't anyone own a drill?

Anyway, front plates are just ugly bug catchers and thankfully my state doesn't require one. I wonder if someday I'm going to get pulled over out of state and asked why I don't have one?

Don't try this in Ohio. It is, as I have repeatedly said, a cop ridden hellhole. They can and will ticket you for for anything they can find. They spend the first day of the month going around looking for expired plate stickers.
