I'm embarking upon a cross country journey of epic proportions next week. My wife and I are attempting a Seattle-Atlanta-Seattle barnstorming tour in a 2004 Mazda3 hatchback.

Talbot might have been a higher-end brand once way back when, but it ended pretty shabby selling cars made by (if I'm not completely mistaken on this one) British Leyland in the 80s.

<a href="http://www.paulridley.co.uk/Lotus%20Talbot%20Sunbeam%20Manchester.JPG" rel="nofollow">Talbot Sunbeam</a>

I think it then too was like a budget Peugeot...

With 44 horsepowers you wound't be able to go beyond second gear with this ugly Land Rover Freelander copy.

The original 2.0 liter engine had 126 hp.

There's a cruise and then there's cruising.
Justin, by that I mean to say one trip will not make a travlin man/car.
Take it from me...I drive 6 hours each way between the Chic subs to southern MO...2 times a month!!
Many cars "seemed" like the car for this duty...only to fail me miserably.
You don't really realize it until the second or third trip.
THEN, suddenly the seat lumbar support isn't really as you thought and the shots of pain going down your leg begin to kill you.
The wind noise and the tire noise that didn't seem to be there on earlier trips now drive you to madness.
The once comfortable back seat with once good rear leg room now has your 6 foot son putting his feet over your seat back and bitchin about the rotten seats.

Is it me or are all teen agers over 6 feet today?

The point is, don't recommend this small SUV for travelin duties until you can bet your life on it.
If it’s anything like the Rav4...forget it.
Been there, done that.
My opinion...stick with a car, preferably one with a good ol' Detroit ride.
