Mercury Merkur XR4Ti

Mercury Merkur XR4Ti

Definitely one of the more interesting cars Lutz was in favor of, the Merkur XR4ti was closely related to the European Ford Sierra XR4i, but the American car got a turbocharged 2.3 liter engine instead. With a sticker price in 1985 of $18,750, higher than a BMW 325e, and a bunch of Mercury dealers that really weren’t interested, this was also one of Lutz’s bigger losers.

Make a modern (unibody/IRS) RWD Ford sedan, or bring one over from Australia? No, I’ve got this freaky European thing that we’re going to sell for more than a BMW.

The Merkur XR4Ti (aka Ford Sierra) was always one of my favorite designs of the 80’s… it was so far ahead of it’s time! Europe got the Sierra, we got the Tempo. What was Ford thinking?

Too bad Ford botched the sales channel idea. Just a year later Ford proved that Americans would embrace aero design with the original Taurus… they just needed to sell it as a premium Ford.

We should also not ignore the Merkur Scorpio… again, very handsome and unique…
