Actually, The Jaguar Sportscar IS An F-Type. Only Not.

By Edward Niedermeyer

Hey, someone from Jaguar talked to the press about the firm’s forthcoming sportscar and let them use their name! Jag’s Julian Rendell tells Autoweek that an “affordable, front-engine sportscar” is likely to be approved by management. No kids, it won’t be an R8-caliber supercar, but rather a long-awaited F-Type. Only it will be called the XE. Which sounds like a trim level on some D-segment commuter car.

Hopefully they will be smart enough to leverage the heritage and unworried enough about all things PC to call it the F-Type.

It would make positioning and advertising less expensive a proposition.

  • KatiePuckrik :

I’d be interested to find out what Mr Rendell’s definition of “affordable” is.

If this car comes in at less than £30K, then I will be doing my bit to stimulate the UK economy and buying it.

God, I love Jaguar cars! :O)

    Bring it on Mr. Tata.

Just make sure it lives up to the legacy.

Well they can’t call it the XKE, and they can’t call it the XF. XE continues with the two letter thing they’ve been doing lately, and considering how well the X-type and S-type are remembered, maybe getting rid of “type” isn’t such a bad idea.

OMG! Someone turned Table Mountain around!

*Looks out of window* Nope, it’s OK, it was just a bit of artistic licence from Avarvarii.

Whew, had me worried for a moment.

Hey, that’s a nice looking car.

  • chuckgoolsbee :

Davekaybsc, Of course they can call it an XKE! Why not?

That term was never an official moniker for the E-type anyway. It was a name made up by US dealers who felt that Americans had no clue about the European racing legacy of the C-type & D-type, but only knew that Jaguar sports cars were called “XK(something)”

Jaguar never called any car “XKE”, at least not officially.

Besides, why not call it that? Model names are re-used all the time (GT, Camaro, Mustang, 300, Challenger, ad nauseum)… and since XKE was never really used the first time…

    @chuck,

I have to disagree. I think that they can’t call it anything “E.”

The E was (still, for you, is) the E. You can’t and shouldn’t re-create the E or attempt to.

    Have to call it “F.”

48 years on from Geneva and tons of engineering evolution later…it should be the “F” and we should hope it is half what the E was in the market.

That’s the sad part isn’t it.

  • bman82 :

Hey, I have an XE, a saturn Astra XE, which proves the point of XE sounding like an economy car trim…

  • chuckgoolsbee :

I’m not suggesting they call it (anything)E(anything) really. Just playing devil’s advocate about the moniker “XKE”.

I don’t hold the letter “E” all that sacred to be honest, even in conjunction with Jaguar. That said, I agree that “F-type”, or even “G-type” would be the wiser choice given the target market.

    How about Gen Xe?

  • dgduris :

    Well,

David E Davis will call it the XK-F.

Just so long as it reminds you of an E-Type (visually) I’ll be placing my order.

  • SherbornSean :

Is there ANY chance they could outsource engineering to Mazda?

  • The Anam Cara :

damn that’s nice. a new jag i like. i prefer this design to the current xk. i’m not bothered by their choice of model designation.

  • Qwerty :

Is there ANY chance they could outsource engineering to Mazda?

Why not? It already looks like an old Miata.

  • Kurt. :

Looks a bit more like the MG than the Miata, but that’s just pulling hairs.

  • akatsuki :

I wish it was better looking.
