Ford is following through on its promise to limit the Mustang Boss 302 to just two years of production. Act now, time is running out.

The greatest Mustang variant on sale today won’t be for around for much longer, as Ford’s 2014 Mustang order guide does not include the 302. Buyers will be limited to the V6, 5.0 or GT500. This is your last chance to get a retro-styled, track-focused, naturally aspirated V8 Mustang.

I’m not alone in my effusive praise of this car. Jack (and his brother Mark) and Brendan are all equally enthusiastic about the home-grown M3 challenger; but only one of us has managed to pony up the entry price.

    Just thinking logically here, but the original Boss 302 was only around for 2 years, but I remember something coming after that had 49 more cubic inches. Can’t beleive Ford would just walk away from such a fantastic halo vehicle entirely…

      When the current Mustang was introduced I remember reading some Ford exec saying that eventually all the fabled Mustang brands would be revived, so a Mach 1 is possible for the 2014 model year.

      Not saying this will happen but the Shelby has a 5.8 (351). So a Boss 351 is a possibility. Most likely minus the supercharger. Hope to see another Mach. I had an Azure blue ’04 Mach, wish I still had it.

    I think they have to honor their promise to keep the buyers from howling about it, but that doesn’t mean they will not come out with something better (or at least as good). Maybe a better track package as an option on the regular GT, or standalone options to get the performance goodies, or simply just selling Boss upgrades through Ford Racing.

      It’s an add-on hardcore mode for the Boss 302.

      From Ford: “R-compound tires, rear seat-delete, stiffer suspension, aggressive front splitter for track use, and rear spoiler and rear cross-car bracing shave seconds off track times and boost lateral acceleration to 1.03″.

        And let’s not forget that absolutely hideous “inspired by my 12-year-old son and sure to be noticed” stupid paint scheme on the Laguna Seca. I mean yikes: a red grille, roof and even the mirrors? Really??? I would NEVER buy one just because of that.

        The Boss 302 got it right though.

        The 2013 Laguna Seca is more subdued. It only comes in the School Bus Yellow or Black, the roof is body colored, and the side stripes and spoiler are dark gray, no more red highlights.

        Methinks you’re thinking about the 2012 BOSS. The Laguna Seca and the normal BOSS had those paint schemes.

        Both variants of the 2013 car are more restrained.

      Without the back seat the Boss 302 Laguna Seca makes no sense to me. Why not get a lighter, sports car from the ground up Corvette instead?

    Ford’s in a hurry to kill this off because it’s as good as the GT500 for $25,000 less.

    Essentially, that means that the GT500 is very much overpriced.

        I’m not going by Ford’s website but by asking prices for new GT500s (67k) and Boss’ 302s (42k) on a coast to coast lookup on cars.com

        The GT500 starts at $55K, but for the 2013 models almost all of them out there are fully loaded, which brings it into the upper $60K range, and dealers are still getting $5K-$10K over sticker on those.

      In spite of your opinion, they still mulled limiting production on the GT500 the past two years.

      It’s a good problem when your strategy department prematurely closes off model year order banks to preserve ‘prestige.’ I can’t confirm the bank closure (maybe our dealer friend Nullomodo can chime in) but I saw the wheels in motion. GT500′s sell beyond profit projections.

        I believe order banks closed on ’13 Mustangs last week.

        The Mustang model changeover has been happening fairly early in the year for the past few model years, but to my mind this seems earlier than the other ones. Haven’t heard any firm word on it, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a very limited 2014 model run followed by a midyear updated ’2014 1/2′ with some special 50th anniversary package before the all new 2015 car comes out.

        Shelbys have been very limited production. We’ve had to turn away buyers for the last few months because we’ve already used out allocation and can’t get any more.

        Just because the Boss is gone doesn’t mean that another name won’t come back – my money would be on the return of the Mach 1.

        Also regarding Shelby vs Boss:

        I’ve had a couple customers trade in older (’10 and ’09 models) Shelbys for Boss 302s. The Boss is a different animal altogether. The Shelby has a lot of comfort features not available on the Boss – leather, navigation, premium sound, etc, and obviously has a lot more straight line power. The Boss is more nimble, and those that have traded to it tell me they like the feel of the MT-82 more than the Tremec in the Shelby. It really comes down to what you’re looking for: the Shelby is more muscle car, and more comfortable, the Boss is a better track car and is more affordable, but doesn’t pamper you as much.

        Wait, so do you mean that it is STILL 2012, hasn’t even turned to 2013 yet, but you can no longer order a 2013 Mustang at all?? Only what in stock now or already on order?

        The official retail ordering deadline has passed. They will still be building out vehicles through the end of the year. The official date for changes/cancellations has past as well, but it may be possible to have an unscheduled order changed to meet a customer request, but no guarantees at this point.

      Agreed if only because you have to spend another 9k over the price of a ZL1 in order to get to almost the same level of equipment ( no two-piece rotors, no magnetorheological shocks, no brembo rear calipers, and no IRS if it matters) all on a chassis that’s probably been amortized many times over by this point.

      If anything the GT500 fully equipped should have only been a bit more compared to the newer Camaro. Then again its great that the Mustang can command these prices, unfortunately it doesn’t bode well for the future.

      It almost seems like Ford wants to fire its blue collar clientele for more upscale buyers, however given the attitude of most younger buyers who are decidedly against muscle cars unless they have all wheel drive and dsg sgifted that strategy might be prescient.

        I’ve been saying this for a long time and all the defenders of all-things-Ford snap back at me that I’m wrong for whatever reason.

        My good friend put it best (i.e. diplomatically) when he & his wife were shopping for a crossover. He told me that “my wife and I scratched Ford off our list based on our one and only visit to a Ford Dealership and short test drive and quick discussion about out the door pricing. Ford is way TOO PROUD of their vehicles.”

        They ended up with an Enclave, by the way, which is a very nice vehicle, and they got it got for far less than a comparably equipped Ford Explorer they had been considering. The Enclave has a better ride (a critical point for them) and is quieter, with more room all around.

        Ford has truly broken the law of rationality in terms of pricing pretty much all their vehicles (there are 2 exceptions I can think of). Some will claim I’m wrong, but time will prove me correct.

        You’re wrong in the sense that they’re killing it due to sales cannibalism. The GT500 is throttled. Just trying to add some fact to your statement if you’re referencing my comment.

        As for your personal opinion, I agree. Not sure if it’s pride rather more intelligent pricing mechanisms. So long as I’m getting a bonus, you are not correct. The day you are correct will suck, hence my optimism.

    Well, that would be just silly for and American company to keep a great car in production. We can’t have that.

    Why do the American car companies keeping killing their good cars. Maybe it isn’t as profitable, but it does add to the brand.

    Didn’t Chevy bring out the Camaro 1LE just to compete with the Boss 302? Chevy is prolly wishing Ford told them sooner.

    Eh, anyone with a Mustang can get some stickers and a strut tower brace. Don’t forget to detune the engine though…the so-called “BOSS” has less torque than the GT.

    No loss, the car was/is a joke.

      You could say that. You could also say the “BOSS” did what the GT could not… That’s embarrass/dust the beloved and iconic “benchmark” M3.

      The Boss 302 did lose 10 lbs/ft of torque, but was/is tuned for high revs and is still building HP at its 7,000 RPM redline… It’s said to make close to 500 HP at 8,000 RPM (with a disabled limiter).

        Only ignorance would allow people to compare a lowly Mustang to a BMW. Where the Mustang has one single purpose (to go aorund a corner) at the expense of everything else (ride comfort, interior features and quality, styling, etc). The BMW combines all of that together and while it may appear to come up short on paper, BMW is not threatened at all by a lowly Mustang.

        I mean, why not compare the Mustang to a Tundra?

        “zOMG, look at how good the Boss is, it absolutely destroys a Tundra!!”

        The Mustang also outhandles Aston Martins too. Big deal, the better car is certainly NOT the Prancing Donkey.

        The M3′s ride comfort, interior features, quality and mostly its styling, is all in your head. Get real, its ride quality is as choppy as any pony car with adjustable shocks. In fact the M3 is just a pony car, plain and simple, if you look past all the badge elitism and city boy one upmanship.

      86SN2001, that is an absolutely idiotic statement.

      I have an AP1 S2000, and the Boss 302 is the only car I would consider, besides a Cayman S, replacing it with. My joy is raucous thrills in such areas as 20mph corners and roundabouts, and “OMG TORQUE LOL” doesn’t do it for me by itself. I have extensively driven both the ’12 GT and the 302 – the 302 is completely different in tenor and feel. Hands down, the 302 delivers the rush and thrill of driving an agile sports car while the GT is an excellent cruiser/bruiser car.

    “Killing off” implies failure, but I understood the Boss 302s were a limited edition from the start, capped at 2,000 orders per year (including just 500 Laguna Secas) for only two model years.

    The Boss 302′s production limit and exclusivity was intend to create a buzz with collectors if not price gouging at Ford dealers.

      You got it right Denver, the didn’t kill off the Boss, like the Mach 1 the Boss was a limited production vehicle.

      Since SVT first appeared the Mustang has been a three model line with special editions thrown in to keep things fresh.

    Seems like it’s time for another Mach 1 with a shaker hood scoop, followed by another Bullitt edition.

    OTOH, can’t say any of that would be really bad, either.

      If Ford does business as usual we will see a Bullitt a few years into the life of the new car. The 2nd Gen Bullitt came out in 2008. Same with the Shelby just a little bit earlier.
