After a 2 percent decline in July, registrations of new passenger cars were up a solid 7.7 percent in August. This according to data provided by Europe’s manufacturer association ACEA. Eight months into the year, 8,888,793 new cars were registered in the EU, or 1.3 percent less than in the same period a year ago.

New EU registrations totaled 753,709 in August. Most markets expanded, including the volume markets. Germany is up a whopping 18.3 percent, the UK is up 7.3 percent, Spain is up 5.9 percent, France is up 3.1 percent, even Italy is up 1.5 percent.

Even ailing Greece is up 1.8 percent.

In the manufacturer department, the Volkswagen Group could lift its market share to 25.4 percent in August, more than double the share of #2 PSA Group ( 12 percent).

GM lost a little market share. Ford gained. Fiat is deteriorating badly to a 5.9 percent share in August.

Ford did well only for August. They lost 34,000 sales for the year, more than Toyota which lost 33,000 sales, while GM gained 13,000. Honda lost 27,000 sales and has just 1% of the market. One has to wonder if they will pull out of EU given how persistently high the Yen has been.

Whatever Ford does, GM is ahead of them.

  • 3-On-The-Tree Lou_BCone of many cars I sold when I got commissioned into the army. 1964 Dodge D100 with slant six and 3 on the tree, 1973 Plymouth Duster with slant six, 1974 dodge dart custom with a 318. 1990 Bronco 5.0 which was our snowboard rig for Wa state and Whistler/Blackcomb BC. Now :my trail rigs are a 1985 Toyota FJ60 Land cruiser and 86 Suzuki Samurai.
  • RHD They are going to crash and burn like Country Garden and Evergrande (the Chinese property behemoths) if they don't fix their problems post-haste.
  • Golden2husky The biggest hurdle for us would be the lack of a good charging network for road tripping as we are at the point in our lives that we will be traveling quite a bit. I'd rather pay more for longer range so the cheaper models would probably not make the cut. Improve the charging infrastructure and I'm certainly going to give one a try. This is more important that a lowish entry price IMHO.
  • Add Lightness I have nothing against paying more to get quality (think Toyota vs Chryco) but hate all the silly, non-mandated 'stuff' that automakers load onto cars based on what non-gearhead focus groups tell them they need to have in a car. I blame focus groups for automatic everything and double drivetrains (AWD) that really never gets used 98% of the time. The other 2% of the time, one goes looking for a place to need it to rationanalize the purchase.
