Just last week the faithful gathered here at TTAC to debate the relevance of motorsport to the business of selling cars. But good Saint Chapman, it seems, had already noticed that Formula One cars rarely resemble anything available to the buying public. And lo, he instructed his one true church to sell a car that changes all that. Thus was born the Lotus T125, a 630 HP, 1,433-lb, F1-style trackday car complete with Cosworth V8, carbon fiber everything and sequential gearbox. And lo, the Ferrari 599xx felt a bit silly, and Chapman saw that it was good. Deliveries of the T125 will begin in April 2011, for a small offering of around one million American dollars. [Autocar]

    Too bad it looks zoomier than their current Formula One car…

      Different companies, as far as I’m aware. The F1 bit is owned by some Malaysian group trying to bank on the name; it’s entirely separate from the road car business. Perhaps something has changed, but I remember reading that the racing naming rights were entirely separate from the road car division. Strategic partnership? Merger? Wishful thinking? Dunno.

      Unfortunately, you’re right – this thing might well be quicker than the F1 version. Lotus may be the quickest of the new teams, but this is damning by faint praise. Poor Heikki Kovalainen – . He and his enormous muppet forehead deserve at least a ride at Renault.

      Trulli should just be happy he’s (a) driving an F1 car and (b) driving an F1 car so horrible that people have stopped mentioning how he’s great at foreplay but just can’t get the job done in the sack.

      The Malaysian company Proton is the owner of both the original road car company (still based in England) and the new F1 Team operating as “Lotus Racing.” The old “Team Lotus” F1 racing team ended in 1994.

      I stand corrected. Clearly, whatever news organization which wrote the article I misinterpreted needs to be severely reprimanded. :)

      Not actually owned by Proton. Proton licensed the name and there is a lot of technical collaboration, but 1Malaysia F1 Team (Lotus Racing) is owned by a Malaysian consortium of shareholders.

    You forgot to mention what appeared in Jalopnik and that is:

    The company’s building twenty five of ’em, selling each for a cool $1 million and forming a private racing league for the owners.

    Ah… context.

    The privileges of the über rich, or wealthy as they’re called here.

    Seems to me less of a brand whoring than half the things with Ferrari and Porsche logos.

    seems more reasonable than having to worry about any road legality like a Caparo T1 had to.

    You can own old F1 cars, hell Ferrari will even keep them running for you, why not a brand new Lotus?

    Its a different world when you are that rich
