Bob Lutz savors his morning cup of Maximum, as he contemplates a wet, foggy day of racing at Monticello. Competitors will get five laps of the 3.5 mile track… assuming all those ponies at the rear wheels don’t leave Cadillacs scattered across the infield. Early practice video shows a CTS-V shouting at the devil on the main straight, but in these conditions the corners are the issue. Updates will be posted as they come in from our man behind the wheel, Mad Jack Baruth.

The pic over Jalopnik shows an M5. Is that Baruth’s ride?
One of the participants in the Wednesday 8PM #carchat on Twitter has a friend who is racing his personal M5. Last I heard the rules state that if a private car is entered, its owner must drive it.
Shame Baruth doesn’t have a high power sedan in his stable.
The EVO may do pretty well on a tight track like this…’Ring times are negligible due to areas where you can build alot of speed. Jalopnik will have to keep the turbo spooling (brake boost?) through the turns.
Jack should have brought the lime S5.
TEXN3: Jack drove up there in his S5… unfortunately, as a two-door any lap times will be unofficial.
A stock S5 can’t take the CTS-V anyway. It’s down 200 horsepower, and the chassis isn’t that tight.

I was being sarcastic about the S5…just wanted a bright green car to stick out among the gray cars (shades of gray). Jalopnik mentioned the track is wet, I’m sure the race will wait until it’s sunny and warmed up a little.
I hope that XF isn’t the base car with the 4.2…
The BMWs might have a shot. Can’t wait to see everyone’s times. Any chance Baruth can actually beat Heinricy?
Jalopnik should hope that the track stays wet. That would give the Evo a shot.
Okay guys, so where can we watch the race/keep tabs on the race? Anyone have the schedule?
The RS4′s chances would be much better in the wet. It’s faster than an M5, but a couple of ticks behind the M3 on a dry track. Too bad there’s no B8 RS4 yet, as the better balance and QS dif would make the car much quicker, even if power was the same.
Which M5 is there? Anyone know? An RS4 is not faster than a E60 M5.

According to the Stig, the RS4′s 1:25 beats the E60 M5′s 1:26. Both are faster than the XFR.
Wow… that green S5 is…. exciting. That isn’t seriously Baruth’s ride, is it? How has he not been arrested?

@Davekaybsc I did not know that! Thanks. I’m guessing that the RS4 is faster in the curves… the E60 M5 with 100 more horse should win on the straight. And, the Monticello course seems quite curvy.

Monticello officials put a chicane in the track’s giant back straight, a 1st gear corner. This, combined with the standing water on the track, should give the Evo and RS4 a fighting shot against the Caddy.

Cadillac Best lap times in the first heat: Michael C. driving a BMW M3 with a best lap of 2:50:424. Jack Baruth in CTS-V put up best lap of 2:51:153 and Archan B. in Jaguar XF-R ran a 3:15.670.

It looks as if the M3 is the car to beat. Which makes me wonder whether a simple $40K 335 is the fastest sport sedan in the world.
