Black and white film hasn't been a money saver for at least two decades. In video the statement makes no sense at all. The same cameras, tape, disc or other storage media is used no matter if for "color" or "black and white". No money to be saved. More likely they were going for a retro newsreel look, which can be cool and attention getting if done right. Saving money has nothing to do with it. I think that's what they were trying to do in this case. It's not a rally to show support, it's a pity plead to the press to stop encouraging GM's demise, as they see it.
